Dear parents of JWS students,
This is a letter from the JWS National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) to inform you about our “We Are Silent” fundraiser to help raise awareness about 7 countries in need of our help, support, and resources. Your child(ren) can donate $2 to purchase a “We are Silent” wristband. Participating students will be silent throughout the school day as they learn about the 7 countries and dress down in the colors of one of the 7 countries they select. NJHS members will sell dress down wristbands during breakfast time on Monday, April 16th, Tuesday, April 17th, and during parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday, April 18th. We Are Silent Day will take place on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
Below is what your child(ren) can buy depending on their grade
Pre-K to 4th grade
● Can come out of uniform in the colors of 1 of the 7 countries below if they purchase a $2 wristband!
5th to 8th grade
● Can come out of uniform in the colors of 1 of the 7 countries below and participate in the We Are Silent Day if they buy the $2 wristband!
Countries NJHS is raising money and awareness about include:
- Ghana (Dress in red, white, and green)
- Kenya (Dress in black, green, and red)
- India (Dress in orange, white, and green)
- Sudan (Dress in red, white, green, and black)
- Venezuela (Dress in yellow, blue, and red)
- Haiti (Dress in red and blue)
- Puerto Rico (Dress in red, white, and blue)

Dear Parents & Students in 6th, 7th and 8th Grades:
In accordance with the requirements of the Constitution of the National Junior Honor Society, this letter serves as an explanation of the selection criteria for admission to the James Ward chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The following information comes directly from the James Ward NJHS Chapter Bylaws. This letter is also posted on the NJHS tab of Sra. Vazquez’s webpage.
Membership
Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty, and shall be based on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship, and character.
Eligibility
a. Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must be in the second semester of sixth grade or in grades seven through eight.
b. To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period of one semester at James Ward School.
c. Candidates eligible for selection to the chapter shall have grades that make them eligible for First or Second Honor Roll at James Ward School (First Honor Roll: All A’s in core classes with nothing less than a B in non-core classes. Second Honor Roll: All “A”’s and B’s in core classes, with nothing less than a C in non-core classes). This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be the required minimum level of scholastic achievement for admission to candidacy. All students who can rise in scholarship to or above such standard may be admitted to candidacy for selection to membership.
d. Upon meeting the grade level, attendance, and grade requirements, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, citizenship, and character.
Selection
The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council consisting of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter adviser shall be the sixth, nonvoting, ex officio member of the Faculty Council.
Prior to selection, the following shall occur:
a. Students’ academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility.
b. Students who are eligible scholastically (“candidates”) shall be notified and asked to complete and submit the Student Activity Information Form, including an essay prompt, for further consideration for selection.
c. The faculty shall be requested to evaluate candidates determined to be scholastically eligible using the official evaluation form provided by the chapter adviser.
d. The Faculty Council shall review the Student Activity Information Form, essay, and faculty evaluations in order to determine membership.
