Dear Parents and Guardians:
¡Bienvenidos! My name is Dawn Vázquez and I will be your child’s Spanish teacher. We are beginning an exciting journey together as your child learns more about other languages and cultures around the world. The Spanish program for grades K-2 is centered around a communicative approach that incorporates the four main language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing that are used in everyday life. Your child will receive Spanish instruction once a week for one hour. We will be creating an interactive Spanish notebook to help document your child’s Spanish language journey. Your child will need a composition notebook for our Spanish class only and will need to bring it to each Spanish class. To supplement the work we do in class, students will occasionally be required to complete homework assignments and periodic projects.
Topics that may be covered in this year’s curriculum include:
· Greetings and Salutations
· Introducing self and others
· Personal feelings
· Numbers 1-100
· School supplies, classroom objects and people at school
· Colors
· Shapes
· Animals
· Descriptions of objects and people
· The calendar and expressing dates
· Basic math in Spanish
· School subjects
· Activities that take place in the classroom
· Seasons and weather expressions
· Describing personal actions and those of others
· Family and the home
· Clothing and the parts of the body
· Cultural practices, traditions, and holidays in Spanish-speaking countries
Learning a second language is an exciting opportunity that is very useful in today’s diverse world. My goals this year for your child include helping him or her to develop vocabulary and knowledge of key phrases in the Spanish language and to help him or her to appreciate cultural differences between our culture and those of Spanish-speaking countries around the world. We will be learning in many different ways including singing, dancing, role-playing, and crafts.
The supplies needed for our Spanish class are:
• Composition notebook to be used for Spanish class only (you may use the same notebook as last year)
• Folder to be used for Spanish class only
• Sharpened pencils and erasers
• Pack of crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue, scissors, or construction paper (to give to teacher)
Your child will be creating his/her interactive notebook next week so please ensure that your child bring his or her composition notebook ready for our next class!
In our Spanish class, we will follow the below five rules to ensure that we have a fun and productive class:
1. Be positive, respectful, and supportive.
2. Be actively engaged.
3. Ask clarifying questions by raising your hand.
4. Face Sra. Vázquez and be silent when she counts down 3 – 2 – 1.
5. Leave our classroom clean and orderly.
If you need to contact me for any reason, please do not hesitate to do so. You can email me at dmvazquez6@cps.edu and I will respond as quickly as possible. Thank you very much and I look forward to working with you and your child!
Sincerely,
Señora Dawn Vázquez
