This dot density map illustrates the exact location of every homicide in the city of Chicago from 2001-present. We wanted the dots to be distinct enough to clearly represent a correlation of homicides by community area. Initially, the dots were all the same color and because there are A LOT of homicides in Chicago (13116 currently, but the dataset is constantly updated), everything blurred together and you couldn’t see a distinct correlation. So, we made a color map that creates a gradient of the year. The older years are yellow and as you approach the present, the dots become more and more red. The final result turned out vaguely how we would have guessed, the majority of homicides are clustered into the west and south sides. The point of this graph is to create a correlation, not prove causation, as we did not perform a test of significance on this data. However, this data provides insight into a possible cause of the uneven distribution of unemployment in Chicago, as the community areas with the most homicides have higher unemployment rates.
In this graph, we modeled the homicites per capita versus the unemployment rate. We found an r value of 0.789 indiciating a strong correlation between the increate in unemployment rates and an increase in the homicide rate.
