Our initial idea relating to how education affects labor participation was that the more involvement a student has with their school, the higher they will aim, and therefore they will be more successful. Therefore we correlated both AP participation with unemployment rate. Each dot represents the average number of students taking AP courses in each school for one zip code. There are a few flaws with this though. First of all, we cannot draw concrete conclusions as this is only correlation, not causation. Second of all, we don’t know if low levels of participation are from school-side or student-side causes. The school could be at fault if there are low levels of options, or low levels of support to push students to take these courses. The student-side could be at fault due to the general stigma against taking rigorous courses, and the community around them not pushing them enough.
