Band

Beginning Band

Prerequisites: None.

This is an entry level course designed for students desirous of learning to perform on wind or percussion instruments; including, but not limited to: flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, oboe, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. Notation, rhythm, pitch, time signature, meter will be stressed. Honors credit may be earned with extra classroom responsibilities, performance opportunities, increased music theory instruction, and/or other opportunities at director's discretion. No previous experience or teacher recommendation is required for beginning band.

Level of Challenge: 1 - 2

Typical Homework Commitment: 30 minutes - 1 hour of practice every week

Intermediate Band

Level: H

Credit(s): 1

Semester(s): 2

Typical Grade Level: 10th Grade (AC and 9th grade students can audition).

Prerequisites: Beginning Band with a A or B or better; Cs and lower must have a teacher recommendation/audition review. Must have 93% attendance or better.

This course is designed for intermediate instrumentalists with at least one year’s worth of musical experience and meant to be taken after Beginning Band. Students must successfully participate in solo, ensemble and large group performances at the school/community level; and must participate in all performances. Class will focus on performing at a high level as well as reading and comprehending sheet music. Music theory instruction will be included.

Level of Challenge: 2 - 3


Typical Homework Commitment: 1 - 2 hours of practice every week

Advanced Band (I, II, III, IV)

Level: H

Semester(s): 2

Typical Grade Level: 11th & 12th (AC and 9th grade students can audition)

Prerequisites: Previous level or Intermediate Band with a A or B or better; Cs and lower must have a teacher recommendation/audition review. Must have 93% attendance or better.

This course is designed for the advanced instrumentalists who have experience in symphonic bands. Students must successfully participate in solo, ensemble and large group performances at the school/ community level; and must participate in all performances. Class will focus on performing at a high level as well as reading and comprehending sheet music. Music theory instruction will be included. Instructor permission/audition is required for this course. If you have taken Advanced Band previously, you may sign up for Advanced Band II or III.

Level of Challenge: 3 - 4


Typical Homework Commitment: 1 - 3 hours of practice every week

Chorus

Beginning Mixed Chorus

Typical Grade Level: 9th / (AC Students)

Prerequisites: NONE

This course is the entry-level course for male and female students desirous of learning proper vocal techniques. Basic music training will also be given in rhythm, pitch, sight-singing, solfege. Honors credit may be earned with extra classroom responsibilities, performance opportunities, increased music theory instruction, and/ or other opportunities at director's discretion. No previous experience required. Depending on enrollment, class may be changed to Beginning Treble or Bass Chorus.

Easy

Typical Homework Commitment:

The class is designed so that most students can complete class assignments during class time. It may be necessary for some students to attend tutoring to receive individual vocal instruction.

Intermediate Mixed Chorus

Level: H

Semester(s): 2

Typical Grade Level: 10th (or by audition)

Prerequisites: Beginning Mixed Chorus with a A or B or better; Cs and lower must have a teacher recommendation/audition review. Must have 93% attendance or better.

This course is designed for the developing male and female vocalists who have at least one year's worth of musical experience in vocal performance on music specifically written for the mixed chorus. This course is meant to be taken after Beginning Chorus. Students must successfully participate in solo, ensemble and large group performances at the school/ community level; and must participate in all performances. Class will focus on performing at a high level as well as reading and comprehending sheet music. Music theory instruction will be included.

Level of Challenge:

Easy/Moderate (Requires prerequisite basic music literacy and vocal experience)

Advanced Mixed Chorus (I, II, II, IV)

Prerequisites: Previous level or Intermediate Chorus with a A or B or better; Cs and lower must have a teacher recommendation/audition review. Must have 93% attendance or better.

This course is designed for the advanced vocalists who have experience in vocal performance on music specifically written for the mixed chorus. Students must successfully participate in solo, ensemble and large group performances at the school/ community level; and must participate in all performances. Class will focus on performing at a high level as well as reading and comprehending sheet music. Music theory instruction will be included. Instructor permission/audition is required for this course. If you have taken Advanced Mixed Chorus previously, you may sign up for Advanced Mixed Chorus II or III.

Level of Challenge:

Moderate (Requires prerequisite music literacy as well as vocal experience, students will be expected to function with a large degree of autonomy)

Typical Homework Commitment:

Students will be expected to work only about an hour a week outside of class time.

Orchestra

Beginning Orchestra

Typical Grade Level: 9th / (AC Students)

Prerequisites: NONE.

This is an entry-level course designed for students desirous of learning to perform on string instruments; including: violin, viola, cello and bass. Notation, rhythm, pitch, time signature, meter will be stressed. Individual and group training will be incorporated into this class. Honors credit may be earned with extra classroom responsibilities, performance opportunities, increased music theory instruction, and/or other opportunities at director's discretion. No previous experience or teacher recommendation is required.

Level of Challenge: 1 - 2

This course is designed for intermediate instrumentalists with at least one year’s worth of musical experience and meant to be taken after Beginning Orchestra. Students must successfully participate in solo, ensemble and large group performances at the school/community level; and must participate in all performances. Class will focus on performing at a high level as well as reading and comprehending sheet music. Music theory instruction will be included.

Students must successfully participate in solo, ensemble and large group performances at the school/ community level; and must participate in all performances. Class will focus on performing at a high level as well as reading and comprehending sheet music. Music theory instruction will be included. Instructor permission/audition is required for this course. If you have taken Advanced Orchestra previously, you may sign up for Advanced Orchestra II or III.
