The SHS Exec Board and Committee Leaders had their summer retreat.
All the leaders were able to learn about each role. The leaders also discussed communication methods, analyzed data from surveys, made adjustments to our chapter, planned for the new school year activities and service, and begin planning for induction. Our leaders were busy!
We went to El Abuelo for lunch. And, we had our first official leadership meeting.
The SHS Engagement Committee planned the "Kick-Off Party" as our first social event of the year. The kick-off party allowed our members to get to know each other, share some food/snacks, and play a game called "basta."
We had a great time!
The SHS Chapter had their annual "Dine to Donate" at El Abuelo in Whiteland, IN.

Some of the SHS members volunteered at the ELC Preschool to help spreading mulch in the adventure area of a preschool. Our members did this in two parts: on Monday, September 4th, and Saturday, September 9th. Thank you to this wonderful students for their help!

The Spanish Honor Society started the celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM).
The SHS Chapter met on Wednesday, September 13th and organized HHM Display Cases to show the CPCSC community a little about the Hispanic culture. There are displays by the cafeteria of WCHS, and CPCSC Central Office (Admin Building).
Some of the SHS members volunteered at the ELC Preschool to help restructure their creek in the adventure area of a preschool. Our members volunteered on Wednesday, September 13th. Thank you to this wonderful students for their help!
15 SHS members volunteered with La Plaza on Friday, September, 15th to help set up for FIESTA Indianapolis.
Students helped by setting up tables, chairs, and other tasks.
After volunteering, students grabbed a bite at Shake Shack before heading back home.
Some of our SHS members attended the annual FIESTA Indianapolis on Saturday, September 16th to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
It was a lovely day with performances, food, and activities.
On Friday, September 22nd, some of our SHS members helped tape the tennis courts at the high school to make pickle ball courts for the Clark-Pleasant Pickleball Challenge.
Our first Hispanic Food Trip of the school year was a success! This was the third time SHS has visited Che Chori.
A huge thank you to Mr. Marcos for having us again, and for sharing with our members about his culture, experiences, and challenges.
The food was amazing! And, we look forward to returning in the future!
September 27th - Some of the SHS members volunteered to help with childcare at the Early Learning Community Preschool while parents were meeting with teachers for Parent-teacher conferences.

During Fall Break (Oct 17th), some of the SHS members volunteered to help with the cleanup of the patio.
The SHS Chapter took some time during their Fall Break (Oct 18th) to come to school and put together the Día de los Muertos Display Cases. This year, we received the marigolds from Harmon Farms Free Range Plants (located in Lebanon, IN). A big thank you to Jess & John Harmon for growing the marigolds for us!
The third display case was created to display the pumpkins for the Pumpkin Contest in collaboration with the NHS and NAHS chapters.
Our second Hispanic Food Trip of the school year was a success! This was the second time SHS has visited La Guanaquita #2.
We had a great time enjoying good conversations with great food and service.
The food was amazing! And, we look forward to returning in the future!
Some of the SHS members attended the COCO Live-to-Film concert hosted at Clowes Hall - Butler University on October 26th.
Aside from the film, the concert included the Orquesta Folclórica Nacional de México of the Ballet Folclórico Nacional de México by Silvia Lozano, which is a musical group that stands out for its ability to fuse pre-Hispanic instruments with instruments from the colonial era. Their performance creates a unique and distinctive sound that evokes the rich history and culture of Mexico. The orquesta was conducted by Esin Aydingoz.
In honor of Dia de los muertos, we celebrated the holiday by having a pitch-in, crafts, and learning more about this special holiday.

The SHS chapter planned and experience a very colorful and fun celebration in Hispanic culture called "Las Posadas." This year SHS decided to show its members what a posada is. We learned about the history and meaning of the tradition, we practiced the posada tradition, and we celebrated!
The SHS chapter also broke piñatas. They ended the event with a delicious pitch-in.
The SHS Exec Board and Committee Leaders had their mid-year retreat during winter break on Wednesday, December 20th.
The leaders reviewed and analyzed the SHS chapter's first semester. They discussed all the positives and adjustment-needed. They analyzed the goals they had for themselves, and they created new goals and adjustments for the new semester.
Our leaders also discussed plans for the second semester and created new goals for the team and chapter.
The SHS Chapter took some time during winter break to create some display cases to share how the Hispanic culture celebrate the holidays.
The display cases share what people eat for the New Year, what traditions they have to welcome the New Year, and the celebration of Día de los Reyes!
The 6th of January, also known as "Epiphany" is a well known and celebrated holiday in many Spanish-speaking countries. This day is also called "Día de los 3 Reyes Magos."
We celebrated by cutting a kings cake and had some Mexican hot chocolate. A few of our members found a "baby" in their piece. Those members who found the "baby" will now have to plan the "Día de la Candelaria" event for February.

The Display-Case Committee worked in the Admin Building's Cultural Display Cases to celebrate Black History Month. They highlighted the Afro-Latino community.

On Tuesday, February 13th we celebrated our "día de la candelaria" event. The students who found el bebé Jesus organized the event. For this event, they decided to do a "día del amor y de la amistad" celebration. The SHS members learned about this holiday, played a vocabulary game on blooket, made some Valentine's day cards for friends, and enjoyed some food and snacks.
The SHS Display Case Committee and other SHS Members put together some new display cases in celebration of Carnaval.
Carnival or Shrovetide is a Christian festive season that occurs before Lent, consisting of Quinquagesima or Shrove Sunday, Shrove Monday, and Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras. Carnival typically involves public celebrations, including events such as parades, public street parties and other entertainments.

"La música sobrevive"
The SHS Chapter celebrated Carnaval on Tuesday, March 19th.
Members in the Engagement Committee planned and presented information on the background of Carnaval, where it is celebrated, and how it is celebrated. After learning about this holiday, we enjoyed some delicious food such as arepas, sweet pineapple and strawberry empanadas, and churros.
The SHS Display Case Committee met over Spring Break (March 28th) to put together the last display case of the year.
For the last display case, the committee researched and highlighted Hispanic artists and famous pieces by them. Some of the artists include: Friday Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, and others.
A couple of our SHS members volunteered at Astral Assisted Living to help with their Solar Eclipse viewing event. March 8th, 2024 will be date to remember as we were able to experience a full eclipse.

On April 24th, some of our SHS members volunteered at Astral Assisted Living to help with their game night.
The SHS Chapter joined the Johnson County Public Library - Clark Pleasant Branch on their "Celebrate Día" event on Sunday, April 28th.
"Día, is an international celebration of children, families and reading. Putting an emphasis on promoting literacy in all children, Día connects children to books from different cultures and languages." - JCPL
The SHS Chapter joined by sharing Hispanic sweets, candy, and snacks. Additionally, SHS taught the children and community members the piñata song and broke two piñatas with everyone.
The SHS Engagement Committee organized a Día del Niño celebration on April 30th. Members from the committee presented on the significance of this day, the history, and how people celebrate children around the world. We also enjoyed some snacks, drinks, food, and broke piñatas!
Children's Day is a commemorative date celebrated annually in honour of children, whose date of observance varies by country. In 1925, International Children's Day was first proclaimed in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare.
We had our May General Body Meeting on May 13th.
We had a great fifth and last general body meeting of the semester/school year: we shared last minute information with our members, honored the seniors, awarded various awards, and had the transition of leadership.
