1. Begin reflecting by reviewing the course objectives. Pick any four to describe how the objectives were met in your newly developed understanding and awareness of emotional intelligence and leadership.
a. 1. Differentiate between leadership and management.
The difference between being a leader and managing people is how the individual works with their subordinates. Management is about controlling a group to accomplish a goal, while a leader influences, motivates, and enables the group. Being a leader is all about building relationships. A leader gets to know their people and use that knowledge to focus on their strong points. A leader should lead the people and a manager should manage the things.
b. 3. Explain the importance of leadership and its contribution to an organization.
Leadership is important because it motivates people. It allows for barriers to be removed so that employees feel involved. In an organization, good leadership allows for the growth of the employees. If an employee feels valued, they will feel better about the work they do. This will then lead to better productivity, which will then allow the company to prosper.
c. 7. Discuss the importance of relationships in the leadership process.
Relationships are important in the leadership process because people need to be able to trust their leader. If trust is gained, an employee is more apt to give it their all at work because they will know that it is appreciated. A leader must be able to show their values because that shows that they care about the people they supervise. This will also allow for more openness so that employees will be willing to show what gets them excited at work. Creating a relationship bond will allow for a better chance of positive and can-do attitudes at work that will carry over into everyone’s personal lives.
d. 11. Demonstrate a personal assessment of competencies through the Health Sciences Major portfolio.
While putting the finishing touches on my ePortfolio, I was able to look back and see my growth over the past three years. I was able to see my growth in my writing and research capabilities through the numerous papers and projects. I am able to see how my PowerPoint presentations and websites have grown into professional works of art. The other projects I have included in it have allowed me to see my growth in educational knowledge. Reading through my past course reflections has let me see how my points of view on many subjects have changed for the better over the course of my time at USD.
2. a. Describe your overall expectation for this class and;
I have been looking forward to taking this class for quite a while because I have had supervisory positions before, and I wanted to learn more on being a better leader. I have incorporated what I have seen and how I want to be in my past and I really wanted to learn the “correct way” of being a leader.
b. Provide three main takeaways from this course (nuggets of information or “A-ha moments”) you were not aware of before this class.
1) My first takeaway from the course was when I learned about Consciousness of Self. I never realized that how I perceived myself reflected on how I lead. This unit of self-discovery was an eye opener and it made me want to work on myself as a person before I get the chance to be a leader again.
2) My second takeaway was when I learned about mission and vision statements. I have heard many of both by being an employee and through advertisements. I never sat back and thought about their importance and what they are supposed to represent about the company. I always thought they were just slogans to catch attention, but now I realize that there is a lot of thought put into these.
3) Finally, I enjoyed the business plan assignment. I have never thought about starting a business until now because I see a lot of possible opportunities. I was amazed at all of the steps it took just to get a business going and to maintain it.
3. Provide three ideas, facts, and/or content (IFCs) that can be directly exercised or correlated into use for college, career, personal life, and future activities.
My first idea that I will carry on after this course is utilizing my self-awareness. I have learned that to be a better leader, I need to know how I react to different people and situations. I learned that showing my emotions is a good thing and I am trying to change this since first learning about it. I believe that this will help me both personally and professionally. Learning about displaying empathy is another aspect that I plan on incorporating into my future endeavors. I have learned that this is an especially important quality that cannot be obtained overnight. I feel that allowing this quality to be seen is vital to being able to gain a person’s trust because it shows that I care. Managing conflict was a good section to learn about because it is almost impossible to go through life without having to confront it. This will help me understand how to bring people closer after confronting what the problem is.
