HSC 305 Course Reflection
Name: Anthony Lund
1. Begin by reviewing the course objectives and select any four to describe how the objectives were met in your newly developed understanding and awareness of professional communication. Add the objective number as a subhead before writing.
· Develop specific skills, competencies and points of view needed by health care professionals.
o I feel that this course has helped my home in on my skills as a medical professional. The Values Assessment allowed me to sit back and self-reflect for a while and see if my values are on track with what I want them to be. Performing the SBAR/SOAP exercises were a good refresher on how they are expected to be carried out.
· Gain a basic understanding of the subject of health care professional communication and relationship centered care.
o Refreshing my knowledge with the SBAR/SOAP assignment was a welcomed exercise because it will help me get back to giving meaningful reports. The Legacy Interview was a fun assignment because it helped me learn to be a little more personal with people and be more relaxed while asking questions. The Career Success Assignments were a welcomed refresher because I was able to practice the important skills of the hiring process.
· Learn to apply course material to improve thinking, problem solving and decisions.
o The Legacy Interview taught me how to focus on the important questions to ask when trying to get to know someone, instead of just performing small talk. The Career Success Assignments allowed me to rethink and change how I went through the hiring process. The Special Project helped me with my researching skills and learn a little more about COVID-19.
· Acquire skills in working with others as members of a team.
o The Discussion Board was a useful way of getting to know my classmates and see from their perspective about certain topics. It helped me realize that everyone has different backgrounds which allows them to think differently. The Special Project was another great way to meet people and function as a whole to get a goal accomplished.
2. a. Describe your overall expectation for this class and;
I can honestly say that I did not research the class before it started, so I was unaware of what the course would offer. When I was able to see what I would be doing and what was expected, I was pleasantly surprised. I have completed paramedic school through USD so I was already aware of most of the class content, but it was a great refresher that allowed me to focus on certain areas that I thought I could do better at. The Career Success section was also a good refresher, since I had just taken the Job Searching in the 21st Century course this past summer.
b. Provide three main takeaways from this course (nuggets of information or “A-ha moments”) you were not aware of before this class. They can be related to work communication, patient-centered communication, career success, legacy interview or something else that is interesting to you.
1) My first takeaway was at the very beginning of the course. The self-esteem section was immensely helpful at making me look at myself. Since I am older, I do not think of this anymore and how much it affects my life. I have incorporated a few things to assist in bettering myself for me and my family.
2) My second takeaway was when we learned about communication effectiveness. It made me self-reflect on how I speak and come off to people. I am prior military and I have been told it shows. I know this will help me in my personal life and with my career.
3) My third takeaway was when I learned about working with children. As a father of two children in their early twenties and one that is nine, the book helped me understand a little more about children and their intricate needs.
3. Provide three ideas, facts, theories/models, and/or content (IFCT) that can be directly exercised or correlated into use for college, career, personal life, and future activities.
a. I will be incorporating what I learned in the Human Relations section in my career and personal life because almost everyday I will be dealing with other people in some sort of way. This will help me understand my relationships with people I meet through passing, and as patients. Everyone is different and knowing how they are different will also better myself as a person.
b. Respecting the patient’s situation was a section that I enjoyed and will use in my career because it will help me while dealing with patients. My experience has shown me that people believe what they want to believe and when they call an ambulance, they think something serious is happening. I have gotten annoyed with this before because it was not a major ordeal, but to them it was the end of the world. Any assistance in being able to remember this is always helpful.
c. Attempting to perfect my job searching, resume, and interview is something that I will use for the rest of my life. I was glad I could have a little bit of a refresher and see it taught in a different perspective. In a perfect world, I would have one job and never want to leave until I retire, but I know this is unrealistic. I now know how to keep my resume updated and always at the ready.
