How long should I schedule for the CFI checkout?

Like most aspects of flight training, the time (and number of sessions) needed for the CFI checkout process varies depnding on the weather, the make and model of aircraft used, aircraft avaiability, the duration of the sessions avilable, the applicant's preparation and proficiency, etc. A well preparred and proficient CFI may be abe to complete the process in one or two 2-3 hour sessions. Others might need 2-4 sessions or more, or they may be rejected outright if their performance is unsafe, substandard, or inappropriate. When scheduling any sessions with me, be sure to read my Rates & Policies page first so that you understand my availability and other important administrivia.

What can I expect during the CFI checkout process?

CFIs are expected to be knowledgable, proficient, safe pilots and subject matter experts. They are expected to be prepared to teach the lesson(s) of the day. Appropriate temperament, integrity, and knowledge of, and adherence to FAA and club rules and standards are important.

In general, here is what you can expect: (during all of this, I may ask you about some things in more detail, I might ask why you made a certain choice, etc.):

  1. Teach me a ground lesson (topic to be mutually agreed ahead of time)

  2. Teach me a flight lesson (topic to be mutually agreed ahead of time)

  3. In addition to the flight lesson, we'll probably also fly a few laps in the pattern with me playing a typical student and/or you demonstrating how to fly the pattern and various takeoffs and landings

  4. I'll observe your pre-flight, and I may ask related questions

  5. I may ask for additional ground or flight lessons, or further discussions, if I feel they are needed to complete my evaluation

How will I be evaluated?

During all of our time together, I will evaluate you on a number of things, including but not limited to (in no particular order):

  1. Preparation for the lesson(s), and for the CFI checkout in general

  2. Knowledge, general - FARs, best practices, reference sources, aerodynamics, physics, mathematics, etc

  3. Knowledge, specific - aircraft operations, POH details, local procedures, club regulations and standards, etc

  4. Checklist usage

  5. Instructional ability (including consulting the POH when appropriate or necessary)

  6. Use of appropriate instructional aids

  7. Quality of flying

  8. Situational awareness

  9. Safety

  10. Disposition and appropriate interaction with students
