Reading fluency is an essential skill that can greatly impact a student's overall reading comprehension and enjoyment of reading. Here are the top three reading fluency strategies for parents to help students:
Read Aloud Together:
Reading aloud with your child is an effective way to model fluent reading. Take turns reading pages or paragraphs in a book, and encourage your child to mimic your pace, tone, and expression. Discuss the text as you go, asking questions about the story to ensure comprehension. Reading together also fosters a love for reading and provides opportunities to explore new vocabulary and concepts.
Repeated Readings:
This strategy involves having your child read the same text multiple times. It can be a short story, a passage from a book, or even a poem. Repeated readings help students become more familiar with the text and improve their reading speed and accuracy. Gradually, they'll become more fluent as they encounter the same words and phrases repeatedly.
You can also make this fun by timing the readings and encouraging your child to beat their previous record. Time him/her for one minute and mark the last word read when time is up. Repeat the timed reading at least 3 times and be sure to help your student pronounce words he/she didn't know. Also discuss the definition of unknown words, provide examples, and give illustrations to maximize your student's understanding of previously unknown words.
