We will partner with the family and the community to provide rigorous, engaging, and relevant work for a diverse student population.
We must empower them to be active and accountable participants in their learning and ensure the success of each student.
It is a process that provides high-quality, research-based instruction targeted to learner needs. Needs are identified by monitoring students’ progress. Adjustments to instruction and interventions are based on students’ performance and rates of success. MTSS promotes a well-integrated system, connecting general, gifted, and special education with intervention and enrichment services. MTSS provides high-quality, standards-based instruction and intervention that is matched to students’ academic, social, and behavioral needs. MTSS was previously referred to as Response to Intervention.

Screening and Identification:
Students who need Tier 2 or Tier 3 support are identified through a clear, consistent, data-driven screening process.
Data-Driven Decision Making:
Our program relies on ongoing assessment data and progress monitoring to identify which students need Tier 2 or Tier 3 support. Smokey Road Middle School utilizes the following to screen students, identify needs, track progress, and make intervention adjustments as needed:
Standardized tests (STAR, HMH, & GMAS)
Monitoring At-Risk Students (MARS) reports
Classroom grades & retention records
Behavior data
Attendance data (tardies, absences, & transcience)
Infinite Campus Flags (attendance, tier 2, tier 3, Elevate, 504, and restorative services),
The amount of time the student has been in the tiers, and
Stakeholder (teacher, counselor, administrator, school psychologist, in-school specialist, & parent) feedback
Research-Based Interventions:
Our interventions are research-based - meaning that they have been shown to be effective through scientific research. They target the specific needs of the students.
Flexibility and Adaptiveness:
Our MTSS program is flexible and adaptive - meaning that it can be adjusted based on individual student progress. For example, if students are making significant progress and no longer need Tier 2 support, they can be moved back to Tier 1. Conversely, if students are not making progress, more intensive interventions can be considered in Tier 3. Students may stay in their current tier if the data points to that decision.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
We keep detailed records of student progress, interventions, and outcomes for decision-making.
Sustainability:
Our program is sustainable in terms of resources - both human and material - to ensure that it can be maintained long-term.
Progress Monitoring:
Our student support team (SST) assesses whether the effect of the chosen interventions is the desired progress toward Tier 2 or Tier 3 goals.
Parent Involvement:
Our program makes room for involved guardians by keeping them informed about their child's progress and making them a part of intervention decision-making and implementation (when applicable). Points of contact are Google Classroom, emails, phone calls, family engagement sessions, and tier 3 (SST) & parent meetings.
Collaboration and Communication:
Teachers, counselors, support staff, and guardians regularly communicate and share data and ensure that everyone is collaborating to effectively support students.
