ALEKS is an online math solution for grades 3-12 that uses artificial intelligence to determine what students know already and what they are most ready to learn, leading to successful learning and increased confidence in mathematics.
Developed by cognitive scientists creating over a trillion pathways for students to learn the content of a course
Ensures not only learning, but also retention through periodic reassessment
Focuses on open response questions and uses a variety of online tools
Provides detailed data for instructors and districts allowing for small group instruction to address learning gaps
Customizable to match content and prerequisites being covered in core instruction for any math program
Teaches students academic language in addition to math
Provides students a personalized pathway after an initial knowledge check ensuring gaps in learning are addressed
Separates content between skills and word problems so students can understand both skills and their applications
ALEKS is available to translate each screen to Spanish as a native Spanish translation
Students could use a translating extension to translate into other languages
ALEKS is written in HTML5, so students could use a screen reader to read the screen
Student Progress in ALEKS:
Teaches students academic language in addition to math
Provides students a personalized pathway after an initial knowledge check ensuring gaps in learning are addressed
Separates content between skills and word problems so students can understand both skills and their applications
ALEKS is available to translate each screen to Spanish as a native Spanish translation, and students could use a translating extension to translate into other languages
ALEKS is written in HTML5, so students can use a screen reader to read the screen
ALEKS meets students at their level to increase learning of grade-level skills within their own personalized pathway
(Closing the Learning Loss Gap: ALEKS Summer Program, Alva White, Richland County, SC).
Pinpoints what topics a student has mastered and what mathematical concepts they still need to learn, with a 92%+ rate of learning the topics presented
(Using ALEKS to Personalize Learning in an Inquiry Based Math Class, Deidre Roemer, West Allis West Milwaukee SD)!
Assists students with detailed explanations and immediate feedback, as well as personal tutor videos and Spanish translation
(How Customization Brings More to the Core, Karl Sain, Cabarrus County, NC).
Provides teachers Insights reports to alerts instructors, allowing for immediate action when students might be at risk of falling behind and need intervention (Customize over Assign, Using Reports to Inform Instruction, Closing Learning Loss Gaps, Keeping Accelerated Students Moving Ahead, Amy Lovett, Collier County, FL).
1 "FREE" - Have students work on their "PIE"
Not aligned to current content
Personalized questions come from what they are ready for, based on Initial Knowledge Check
After 10-12 skills competed, a Check in is automatically assigned to check progress
2 "ALIGNED" - Align Reveal and assign content from current module (I like!!!)
VIDEO: Using Suggested ALEKS Assignments from Reveal Math
PIE gets updated based on work
Teacher data tells how students are doing in module skills VIDEO - Using ALEKS Data to Drive Instruction in the Reveal Math Classroom
Questions come from current module (not section) AND previous modules (prereq's - In Module 6, questions from Modules 1-5 included)
Set dates of when modules covered to "set" pre-requisites
3 "ASSIGNMENT" - Create problems ONLY from the current section
VIDEO-Aligning ALEKS to your Reveal Math Scope and Sequence
Can be printed - multiple customized versions of the same problems with different values (Great for collaborative group work!!)
No effect on PIE progress
Gives teachers a snapshot of where student is in CURRENT SECTION
Weekly/Daily Checks Item Analysis - teacher data strong
Can be set for auto re-try's (and can be just the wrong problems set to redo, or all problems)
4 "SCREENING" - Initial Knowledge Check and Course Placement
Great option for MTSS advisory work. Students work through PIE, interventionist assists. Tutorial videos included on MOST topics.
School wide report on skills available.
Screening tool if normed against school results.
"Initial Knowledge Check" - 25-30 ?s to know what % of PIE student knows already for that course - NEW STUDENT SCREENING
"Course Placement Check" - NEW - 15 ?'s to see if student is ready for a course.
(1) ALEKs Pie --> downloads --> class progress PDF
I give this to my students every couple weeks to show them their progress. It's a great report to give to a parent in a meeting to show what they have learned compared to where they started. I also use this to help set goals for them each month - my "fun stickers" are their monthly reward.
(2) Knowledge per slice --> download summary
If you want to see growth in a particular area this gives the topics learned by slice. You can use this to direct their work to a different piece they are ready to learn but have been avoiding...
(3) Time and Topic
I don't really look at the time, I look at the topics and the log in date. If I give an assignment to complete 2 topics on 10/1, I'm looking for topics covered on a date at or after 10/1
How to's
FORCE A COMPREHENSIVE KNOWLEDGE CHECK: (end of each quarter)
In your class, go to "Assignments"
"New Assignment"
"Scheduled Knowledge Check"
Title: "Q1 Comprehensive Knowledge Check"
Set start and end date that works for you.
"Goal" to 100%
Turn on: "Comprehensive Knowledge Check"
Enabled. All Students.
Select: "Students must take the assignment as soon as it is available"
Good idea: "Prevent automatic Knowledge Checks up to 5 days before"
Letter grades up to you.
Do not save for future assignments
INCOMING STUDENTS with data from previous years:
Class Administration
Class Summary
Class Options - Edit
"Require Comprehensive Knowledge Check" - All Incoming Students
Do for each class.
Initial Knowledge Check is NOT:
a test where you look to get 100%.
about the percent earned.
a "test" of what you know now.
Initial Knowledge Check is:
finding content you already know to SKIP it when working on later content
sets a Starting Point to work from.
saves time - no need to work on what you already know.
"TOPICS"
Typically 5-8 topics per hour.
May be assigned for HW, but no affect on Pie.
ALEKS goal NOT to create assignments.

More information about customizing
On demand recording: Recorded Initial ALEKS training Access Passcode: ALEKSis#1
to communicate with students
Set topic goals up in ALEKS too if you’d like! (Optional step)
Five to ten topics per week is a good place to start
Be careful of “assignments”
Great way for students to have a few problems from a certain section of IM/EM outside of their prescribed pathway
Customize content (this will make the personalized pathway in ALEKS align to your text book) Video showing process
Integrate Reveal text: Class Administration, Class Summary, Class information and content, edit
Customize order by date or priority: Class Administration, Class Customization, ALEKS content customization
Specific document on customizing content:
Assignments vs customizing
Here is a detailed session on the benefits of customizing versus assigning and when to use each:
October ALEKS training Password: ALEKSis#1 (minutes 16-45)
Printing worksheets versus assignments
Worksheets are specific to a student’s pathway and cannot have topics selected specifically. Printing assignments allows you to select the exact topics and print up to 5 versions.
1 Progress report (Video, PDF)
See how much time they spent on their initial assessment (should be 30-60 minutes)
See how much they knew on that initial assessment in the blue bar
2 Time and topic report, big brother spying on student activity (Video, PDF)
Shows how much time students are spending in program (less important)
Shows how many topics students are learning (more important)
Look for's in the ALEKS classroom
Integrate IM/Reveal text: Class Administration, Class Summary, Class information and content, edit (Must complete both steps to change the order)
Customize order by date or priority: Class Administration, Class Customization, ALEKS content customization
Set topic goals up in ALEKS too if you’d like! (Optional step)
Five to ten topics per week is a good place to start
Great way for students to have a few problems from a certain section of Reveal outside of their prescribed pathway
Help to get ready for high stakes assessments
Horrible way to customize what students see next because it ignores information that ALEKS already knows
Handout for Average Progress Report, custom reports, other admin reports.
FREE trial instructions - can show student view this way.
Can we give a Progress Check on a certain date, for all students? Almost like a screening, even if they have not met the 5 hrs/20 topics gate.
You can. It will reset their 5/20 counter too.
As an RtI interventionist, can we see all classes results to monitor students?
If you link with Aspen you would need to be a coteacher in Aspen in order to see those classes. If you do not link with Aspen you can share access with other adults to a class manually.
Can a student be enrolled in multiple classes at once?
We wouldn’t want them to be, but it is possible. It would consume two subscriptions and make them complete content multiple times.
Does the system sync with Aspen?
It can or could not. There are benefits and drawbacks, but typically folks find it is worth it to have students auto rostered for them.
Any schools on a block schedule in my area use this?
In my option blocks make it easier because you can complete a period of direct instruction and then still have time for a full rotation. So some local users in Rhode Island include Cranston, Central Falls, Lincoln, Providence, and North Providence.
Is there an app for a phone? web based?
