The Number Facts Fluency Programme is designed to impart a fundamental set of number facts, referred to as "grid facts," along with the calculation strategies employed by highly proficient learners and nations for solving them. Drawing inspiration from phonics programs used in early reading education, this programme systematically categorizes these grid facts and teaches them in conjunction with the corresponding calculation strategies needed to solve them.
Central to this program are the Addition and Subtraction Fact Grids, which serve as the foundational facts for addition and subtraction, akin to the role of times tables in multiplication and division. These root facts form the basis for all future addition and subtraction calculations. The program ensures a thorough teaching of all grid facts to achieve fluency. It outlines a structured journey through the addition and subtraction grids, linking each calculation strategy directly with its applicable grid facts.
The teaching of core facts is accompanied by 12 calculation strategies, enhancing children's understanding of numbers and their relationships profoundly. By learning and applying these strategies, children are equipped to deduce unknown facts from known ones. The program advocates for the explicit instruction of these derived fact strategies as a potent method to secure fluency in addition and subtraction facts for children at all levels of ability, including those who find learning more challenging. Each of the 12 strategies is described in detail, underscoring their significance in fostering a deep numerical comprehension.
