My short time at FNCE in Chicago was truly inspiring. I went as a Junior and it opened my eyes to acknowledge the dedication dietitians have with their profession. I loved being surrounded by an abundance of students who had the motivation and drive to become an RD. Because of this conference, I want to advocate for my profession and teach others about nutrition. This is a video of my fellow dietetic peers and me, which we created before attending FNCE.
I became a dietary aid my sophomore year of college. I have learned that I have a passion working with the geriatric population. Working as a dietary aid has assured I have beneficial skills working with altered diets. I have learned how to accommodate food for residents and use adaptive equipment to assist with eating and drinking. I also demonstrate proper sanitation strategies when working in the kitchen. Having the opportunity to work in a nursing home has given me food service experience, as well as some clinical experience. I have become an expert at communicating with older adults to ensure they understand what is being conveyed. Gaining experience within a long term care facility connects aspects of my education to a real life setting.
Being the nutrition lab assistant, I have achieved the knowledge of working in an institution. I assist with the quantity meal production, and am responsible for keeping the lab cleaned and sanitized, as well as doing the laundry. I am responsible for organizing nutrition files and food models. I had the opportunity to make and present a poster to prospective students touring Concordia, which exemplified Concordia RD grads in practice.
I recently accepted a position as a Diet Tech at Essentia Health. I aspired to gain more hospital work experience. I mainly spend my time answering room service calls from patients or nursing staff. I am gaining quality communication skills through speaking over the phone and suggesting foods that fit in patients diets. I do calorie counts which I report to the dietitians. I am enjoying my first few weeks at this new position as I am building relationships and learning a lot.
I had the wonderful opportunity to shadow nine dietitians through a 40 hour practicum in the summer of 2018. I gained experience being involved in the hospital with the dietitians. These experiences included charting on patients, helping the dietitian figure out needed calculations, attending interdisciplinary rounds, followed handouts given to the patients at outpatient centers, and gained an understanding of what a clinical dietitian does. The experiences strengthened my dream to pursue being a clinical dietitian.
I have been a babysitter since I was a sophomore in high school. I started babysitting my neighbors, and after graduating high school, I became a nanny. I then began babysitting for a different family (pictured) since my original nanny family moved. I use skills learned from my courses to provide a sanitary environment, implement healthy eating habits, and encourage physical activity. I strive to be a role model as they learn the nutrition facts I provide them. I enjoy learning how to communicate nutritional information to different ages.
