I became a part of Student Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (SAND) my freshman year after realizing my career path was to become a RD. Being involved with SAND provided the opportunity to hear from multiple dietitians around the area. This allowed me to ponder the numerous occupations I could pursue in my future. I also volunteered with the food pantry, Dorothy Day House, ENERGIZE at elementary schools, and serving dinner at a cultural event. Because I enjoyed this group, I became apart of the leadership team junior year and continued senior year, as Public Relations and Social Media. I enjoy being involved with a team to plan different events for SAND. I also assisted in preparing for an alumni homecoming gathering breakfast to visit with past dietetics grads (pictured).
Dance marathon isn't what I expected as I anticipated an abundance of dancing. The main purpose of "dancing" was raising money for the Fargo, ND Sanford Children's Miracle Network. My junior year I was on the leadership team planning events as the Event Scheduling Chair. I then desired to be more involved with the families and kids, so senior year I became the Family Relations Director. The photos exhibit how we delivered thanksgiving cards to the hospital, and the amount we raised last lear. This organization has inspired me to be involved with local hospitals and charities, as I experienced our team raise money for an admirable cause.
Due to my long term goal of being a clinical dietitian and potential manager, I volunteered at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND. During my 40 hour clinical rotation in the summer of 2018, I worked with a NICU dietitian which facilitated my interest working the the NICU. Seeing how influential a NICU dietitian is within a hospital inspired me to volunteer at the NICU in Fargo in September 2018. I was given the responsibility to keep everything sanitary as it is intensive care. I am volunteering at Cullys Cabin at Sanford this spring semester (2019), where I assist helping children ages 3 and older cope with their illness.
I interacted with different cultures through planting, picking, and selling vegetables. This was a great experience as I got the opportunity to build a community and observe people come together to pick nutritious foods. At the end of each day, we took vegetables home which encouraged me to cook with unique vegetables. I desire to continue volunteering with community gardens so I can help others build relationships and guide them to healthy eating.
I was involved with Kiwanis club my freshman and sophomore year of college. This group revealed the importance of volunteering in a community. We raised money on halloween for kids with the United Nations Children Funds through UNICEF. I also had the opportunity to volunteer at a church by serving pancakes which happened to be my church when I was a child (photo). Every meeting we would donate the change in our pockets, which emphasized the significance of donating to people in need.
