Starting in 1994, the Georgia High School Association moved to a team format for the state tennis playoffs, replacing the old format of using points from the individual state tournament.
To date, the 1997 team is remembered as the most accomplished team in the history of the program. Finishing Region 1-AA Runner-Up, the Hornets defeated two region champions on the road to the school's first and only Final Four in tennis.

Making their first playoff run in the AAAA classification, the Hornets came so close to advancing to the Final Four for the second time in school history. Defeating Mary Persons and Wayne County in the first two rounds, the Hornets would fall to Westover in a rematch of the Region 1-AAAA semifinals in which the Hornets won 3-2. Cook erased a 1-2 deficit to tie the match at 2-2, but Westover was able to capture the final point with a third set win at the second doubles position.
