With the first volume of Mirrors, we wanted to commemorate the power and energy it takes to make change. More importantly, we wanted to take control of the conversation and let young people embrace their own power. As you read and experience Conway High School students' research, creativity, and passion, think about what it means for all of us to "be the light shining bright." Enjoy!
Special note: this first volume includes many diverse figures and topics; keep a look out for those that include Spanish translations. Ms. Caplan and Ms. Carson worked with their students to cultivate powerful access for all readers of our quarterly!
Dolores Huerta was born in Dawson, New Mexico on April 10th, 1930. She soon moved to California in a town called Stockton. Huerta grew up listening to her father speak of organizing unions in the mining industry and was fascinated. Her mother owned a hotel that would offer housing to the impoverished, which sparked an interest in civil rights. After facing discrimination in her high school, Huerta was determined to change the world and rid it of racial biases.
She co-operated and founded an organization called the Community Service Organization, which sought to provide economic relief for Hispanic farmers. She utilized her knowledge of Spanish and English to get the word out to more activists. Later, she founded the Agriculture’s Workers Association alongside the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chaves. Each organization fought for better pay and working conditions for Hispanic-American farmers and workers.
She served in the U.S. Commission on Agricultural Workers, was accepted into the Women’s National Hall of Fame, and won the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Without Dolores Huerta, Hispanic farmers and workers in general would not have as many rights.

Origin of Chávez
Born on March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona, César Estrada Chávez was the second of six children. His parents were both store owners and farm workers. The farm they worked for was a farm established by Chávez’s grandfather. Managing both the farm and the store was hard work, but their hard work paid off. That was until the Great Depression began to hit. Not being able to make enough to pay their taxes and also provide for their family, the Chávez family lost their home, store, and over one hundred acre family farm.
After losing their place in Arizona, the Chávez family had to find somewhere else to go. The Chávez family joined more than 300,000 people that flooded into California during the Great Depression, and they made money through migrant labor. As Chávez grew up, he worked on the fields and even quit school at seventh grade for full-time field work. Chávez worked very hard, but he soon recognized a problem. Even when working long hours, his co-workers and he were paid very little to nothing.
Civil Rights and Labor Movements
After being exposed to the poor treatment of farm workers and Hispanic Americans within and out of the workforce, Chávez studied labor and civil rights movements.
Chávez soon joined a Latino civil rights group, Community Service Organization (CSO), and worked hard to register new voters and fight racial and economic discrimination. He worked his way up to become the CSO’s national director, but resigned when he faced too many challenges trying to form a labor union for farm workers. That didn’t stop him from his goal. The same year of his resignation, Chávez used his life savings to found the National Farm Workers Association (now known as the United Farm Workers of America). The NFWA started and participated in the 1965 Grape Strike, a five year strike on California grapes. Soon the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) joined with the NFWA, and they helped make the strike stronger together. Through this strike, farm workers gained a pay raise, health-care benefits, and safety protections from pesticides. One of many victories Chávez, the NFWA, and AWOC achieved with their combined determination and dedication.
Later Years
The National Farm Workers Association and the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee joined together after their victory with the Grape Strike. Now combined, they became the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee and later became the United Farm Workers of America.
Chávez continued strong in his work with the United Farm Workers of America. He made the nation recognize agricultural worker’s rights; he helped countless farm workers and their families; and he even achieved many of his own goals. His drive in his work carried on until his death on April 23, 1993, but in death his determination still lives on as inspiration to those it touches.
At Conway High School, language is a diverse institution. Not every student who goes to school here speaks the same language, and that diversity makes us better since we get to be around all different types of people. The world we live in is unique - so we should see that and embrace it here. Make an effort to get to know fellow human beings and their aspirations.

Sometimes we might expect people from other parts of the world to be totally different than us, but oftentimes the opposite is entirely true. People who live in other countries often enjoy the same music, television, and movies we do. Even when they have unique tastes, it's an opportunity for us to learn about new culture. People share many of the interests and values we're used to regardless of where they're from. New to Conway High School this semester, Isamael shared some information about his life with us. It's a reminder that all of us are human beings and that nothing really separates us.
Some of his favorite musicians are Maître GIMS, Aya Nakamaru, and NoCap. When thinking about movies it's definitely Fast and Furious, but he also enjoys the Netflix show "Money Heist." Isamael has been here in Conway since August 6th, and when we asked him about his thoughts on the city and school he noted that "people here are really nice." Isamael speaks French, but was very clear in the interview that Arkansas was really hot when he first arrived. He's glad it's cooling down and looks forward to a future career in the Army or possibly engineering.

Tupac Shakur, known as “2pac," was born June 16, 1971 in East Harlem, New York. He died September 13, 1996. He was an American rapper, songwriter, poet, and actor. He is one of the most influential rappers in music history. Tupac was able to inspire people and educate, while becoming an influence to people all over the world regardless of race or gender. Tupac inspires many people to think about how to make a change or a difference in their life.
One important topic related to Tupac is how he died. He was shot multiple times. His death strongly impacted the world. It is important to compare this to the many African Americans who have been shot or killed that will never receive the type of attention as a celebrity because anti-violence isn’t conveyed around the world. Tupac was a legendary figure who allowed music to be his instrument of activism. In most of his songs, Tupac voiced his disapproval of being stereotyped by both police officers and white individuals in America. He despised hate, prejudice, and violence against his own people and was determined to make a change.

Althea Gibson was born August 25, 1927 in Silver, South Carolina. Gibson was one of the very first African American women to play tennis. As a young kid, Gibson knew she loved playing tennis and took it seriously. When she was just 12 years old she won a citywide tournament. This caught the attention of her neighbors and they helped her by raising funds to help pay for tennis lessons.
In 1947, she won her very first tournament which was sponsored by the American Tennis Association. This organization was founded by African American tennis players which gave Black people better opportunities to pursue tennis if they were interested. Because of her race, Gibson was barred from national events, but that didn't stop her. She continued to play in different tournaments all over the country. Gibson attended the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee. While attending this university, in 1950 she became the first African American to compete in the US National Championship. The next year she played in the Wimbledon Tournament, being the first Black person to ever be invited. Gibson's name became known for her dominant serves and her powerful plays.
By: Nastylia J.
Gibson played in different parts of the world such as Asia, Europe, and Australia. In 1957, she won Wimbledon Women's singles and doubles and won the women singles championship at Forest Hill. She became the first Black champion in the 80 year history of Wimbledon and received the trophy from Queen Elizabeth. Gibson retired from tennis having won 11 Grand Slam titles. She was the world's top-ranked female player. In this time period women didn't receive many benefits, especially if they were African American.
At age 36, she took up professional golf, becoming the first African American on the LPGA tour. Racism followed her, as country clubs rejected her and refused to let her compete. Fans of golf called her hateful slurs and she was sometimes forced to change clothes in the car away from anyone else so she wouldn't be harmed. This didn't stop her from pursuing what she wanted to do.
Gibson's success in two predominantly white sports inspired generations of Black athletes to pursue their dreams. Gibson said, “If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.”
Diversity is not always something we can see - sometimes, we have to have conversations about who we are, what we've been through, and how we feel to know what diversity really is.
One of our talented contributors, Kali C., completed a collection of powerful poetry discussing mental health issues. To be the light shining bright means we embrace others and try to understand their human perspective. What can you do in your daily life to make this a reality?
In this powerful piece, CHS senior Amethyst R. discusses the historical understandings of life, death, and the feelings we encounter in between. The piece is a powerfully researched and thoughtfully reflective reminder that mental health is important. The way we view the world around us is fundamental.
As you read, think through what the historical information means in relation to how we perceive mental health today. Ask yourself: how can we become more transparent and reflective with our actions? How can we become more supportive to others in need?
ORIGINAL ARTWORK AND WRITING BY NAKIYAH T.
Depression is a serious mental illness that can interfere with a person’s life. And most people do not understand how it can affect everyday life especially as a teenager . It can cause long-lasting and severe feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities. It can also cause physical symptoms of pain, appetite changes, and sleep problems. In today’s world more than 13.3% of kids ranging from 12 to 17 are depressed in the United States. And it's so simple to let someone with depression know that they are not invisible. Even if you just compliment someone or hold the door open for someone it can impact them tremendously. Be the change and help someone in need of love. You never know what anyone goes through on a day to day basis behind closed doors.
Bebe Moore Campbell was a mental health advocate who worked throughout her career to shed light on the needs of the Black community. Campbell helped establish resources and connections for communities of color so that they might have a robust access to support systems. Campbell is a reminder that we all possess the power to make change and leave a lasting mark on the world. Her impact is one of positivity, and it is something we can all strive toward.
All people face some type of discrimination or inequality but I believe it is more common with African Americans due to our past history which can take a huge toll on mental health. Being treated or perceived as “less than” because of the color of your skin can be stressful and even traumatizing. Even Black celebrities such as Jennifer Lewis, Jada Pinkett Smith, Kendrick Sampson, and Michelle Obama have been outspoken in efforts to normalize the conversation by expressing their own struggles with mental health in general, especially during this time of social unrest. Black people are beginning to confront emotions, traumatic experiences, and daily struggles that they may have otherwise pushed aside. And seeking mental health care has become increasingly accepted.
COVID-19 sheds light on the many Black people who have been struggling in silence for years. Black people have experienced or witnessed racist insults, micro aggressions, hate crimes, even physical violence. Due to discrimination, many marginalized groups face higher levels of stress. Racism is a known cause of increased levels of depression and anxiety. These experiences often lead to PTSD and generally increased levels of emotional distress. Racism can also lead to internalized racism and self-hate, causing individuals to subconsciously or consciously have negative beliefs about their blackness and their worth.

Jhene Aiko Efuru Chilombo makes sure she leaves her calm, soothing, and impactful mark in all her songs. Her recurring theme is how important it is to put your mental health first. Even when things get hard, “you gotta keep going” Jhene says in her one of her songs.
She is always kind wherever she goes and always keeps it real in interviews. Being such big artists and influencers, drama is bound to find its way in. But Jhene makes sure she stays away from it, refusing to fight fire with fire. Now being 33 years old with a child, she definitely shows that it's alright to not always be in the the spotlight. But it's always right to do the healthy thing. She shows that it is still ok to be kind to others and forgive especially considering how society is now.
Jhene also puts in her songs that her brother died not to long ago. I truly believe she makes her music to have and create a safe space for listeners to go through to let them know they are not alone through their hardships. That music can be a platform to spread awareness of mental health and encouragement.

As a white person I know my place regarding racial tensions in the United States, but I can’t sit idly by allowing people of color to continue living the way they are without feeling guilty. I don’t want to imagine how terrified people feel to be pulled over when they know they’ve done nothing wrong, I don’t want know what it feels like to be the butt end of a joke that seems harmless in the moment but really leaves a mark, I don’t want to feel like I don’t fit a beauty standard set by white people that doesn’t fit me. I don’t want anyone to feel that at all.
To be the light shining bright as allies we need to light the way for everyone in need. We need to be the light by educating ourselves on the hardships people of color face in the United States. Simply talking to friends you have about these issues can be a lot, ask them about their experiences, if you’ve ever made them feel uncomfortable, or how you can help. There is no better way to learn about something than to learn from first hand experiences. Simply listening to someone’s story will be more individually than what the United States has done for people that have been discriminated against or unjustly treated. Don’t just listen to their story and feel bad for them, feel empathetic and do something. Use your privilege to their advantage, the US still makes white voices louder than any others, so why don’t you say what needs to be heard. Be a voice for those who don’t have one, but don’t overshadow other’s voices for your advantage.
In the US we are given the privilege to petition and vote on policy to be implemented into our communities. During election time we need to vote in support of policies such as police and education reform and infrastructure bills to build up our communities onto the same playing field. If you can’t vote, encourage those close to you to vote and use their voices for good as well. Be the light by voting for candidates and bills that advocate for positive change in our communities.
To be the light we must light the way for others before ourselves, no matter what circumstances they may be in.

Born of the bible into a world of disbelief
Jealousy and defeat would soon overcome me
Forced to keep everyday the same as those around me showed hatred on my name
Left alone after going from home to home my father came back after being long gone
Once again my life had been kicked in as I suffered from an incurable syndrome
I grew and I knew that it would take more than just 1+2 to do what I wanted to
Attitude became askew and I would go to my roots after trying to do what adults do
This made me take lead and though I wasn’t sure of what I saw I knew I would succeed
Now I'm seen on more than national TV and I go by the name Oprah Winfrey.
Inspired by the quote:
“Turn your wounds into wisdom.”

Born October 19th, 1894, John Brother Cade was a promising young man. As John grew up he juggled school with working in the fields with his father. After he graduated from high school, that changed. In college, John was one of the first to sign up for participation in WWI, and soon enough he was drafted, quickly rising the ranks. John returned home in 1917 with a Purple Heart and began work on his education, gaining a bachelor's degree in 1921 and a master's degree in 1928.
Professor Cade’s main interest was archiving history, which he did for the remainder of his life. He also wrote diaries about his experiences in WWI. Arguably John B. Cade’s best task in life was his effort to archive the stories of nearly 500 freed slaves. These interviews were split into two sets and lasted from 1929 - 1938. Although at the time it might have been instinct, this action helps us understand so much further the pain that slavery had on those it impacted directly. John B. Cade is remembered by his grandchildren, and his name is appointed to a library on the Southern University campus.

We walk the hallways of our school everyday and pass by tons of people. We take it upon ourselves to make assumptions and assume based on appearance who we will make our friends. Normally we only give time to people we see fit, and throw others away. But by giving someone a second chance you may find yourself surprised.
In room 113, I had the pleasure of speaking with four extraordinary people. Two of them were students, Alex and Jaalon, and two of them were teachers, Mrs. Haynes and Mrs. Knapps. In the time-span of 30 minutes I found out interesting and enticing facts about each.
Alex has an infectious love for dance. His moves are second to none and he enjoys showing them off. He is Mrs. Haynes' right hand man, and his best friend is Aaron. He loves to give out hugs and to hang out with P.E kids playing basketball.
Jaalon enjoys singing. Together, he and Alex create an amazing duo. He is also a part of the school's choir and is one of the most respected and loved students by his peers. After speaking to Mr. Husky, I have found that he is a dedicated student who never complains. He is very kind-hearted and gives respect back to all his classmates. “He always talks about how he loves pizza, Spider-Man, and SpongeBob.” Mr. Husky states that “he loves to sing and is an asset to the choir.”
Though Jaalon isn't just devoted to his choir class. He and Alex both enjoy their day at school. They may need a little extra help, but that just makes achievements more meaningful. Some students look down on this, not understanding the importance. But their teachers, Caring Cats, and students who take the time to talk to them are more inclined to understand how spectacular these things are.
Mrs. Haynes was a Caring Cat when she attended high school. She informs us that this is the reason she wanted to be the Special Education Teacher. Her love for her students doesn't falter even on the hardest days. She reports that her favorite memories are when her students and her can take small breaks to dance, sing, and laugh. “The most important thing I could tell you is to include my students. They are just like the rest of you and love to be involved. They have so much joy and love to give.” She enlightens us.
Along with her comes Mrs. Knapp. She recalls memories and moments that have been buried deep within her heart. She remembers taking a field trip to Pulaski Tech. Her students got to see programs that fit their needs as well as all the unique things they offer. After the visit they went to eat at the restaurant Brown’s Buffet. It was wonderful because the students got to pay for themselves. When everything was said and done, one of the students applied to the university and was accepted.
However, she enjoys her everyday life with her students as well. One day in P. E she got to race one of her students. She tried to walk alongside him, but wasn't able to because he did not allow people into his personal space. After coming to an agreement, they decided to compete with each other. To her surprise he won. She never saw him do anything other than walking, so it came as a shock.
Moments like this are what drew her in. After subbing for a special education class she realized the toll it had on her heart. Mrs. Knapp never imagined that this is what was in store for her, but making a difference with their lives is what makes her happy. “I realized I could prepare them to live the best and most independent life possible after high school. It hurts when people are pushed aside for being different, and it's not fair. So passing by and saying hello would mean a lot. Alex and Jaalon, along with their peers Ode, Aaron, and Abel, deserve the chance to be heard. Listen to their stories and help create new ones.
