The aim of Kindergarten is to provide a basic foundation for your child's education. It is a program geared to make the transition from home to school as smooth as possible, and to make each chid's first experience with school a successful and happy one!
The Kindergarten program is an all day program designed to help stimulate a good self- concept and provide each child with many experiences of achievement. Kindergarten children will work and create independently and learn to cooperate with others in a group. The program will provide opportunities for social and emotional development, inspire language development, and expand physical and mental growth.
Children are alike in many ways. Each goes through the same stages of growth but not in the same way!
In most instances, Kindergarten children start school on the basis of their age. However, all five year old children have not reached the same level of development. Each child is as "old as his/her behavior" and at Conestoga we pride ourselves at meeting the student's at their level in order to support their growth!
Upon entering Kindergarten, some children will learn to read and write more readily than others. This is expected since exposure to language and literature is different for all children. We must remember that regardless of exposure, some children will not learn to read and write as easily as others. You cannot make a child learn, but you can help him/her to be able to learn and to want to learn! The attitude a child develops may help or hinder their ability to learn. Regardless of when a child starts to read and write, all children need early instruction and maybe even extra guidance. With this in mind, part of our role is to provide challenging tasks for all levels of learners!
Early intervention or PREVENTION is key to avoiding academic difficulties and increasing the chance for success in school. In addition to our preschool and Head Start programs that support our students in being prepared for Kindergarten, we ask you to reflect on your child and their readiness for Kindergarten. Past experience has shown that if there is any doubt as to whether a child is mature enough to enter, it may be best to allow him/her another year to grow!
Student progress is reviewed routinely and evaluated once a quarter using a Standards Referenced Report Card. The standards have been set by the Nebraska Department of Education. These results will be sent home with your child and will also be reviewed at our Parent Teacher Conferences which are held twice a year. We want you to remember that all children develop at a different rate and move progressively from skill to skill.
