He has been teaching in the University of Athens, University of Peloponnese, University of Central Greece, Hellenic Open University and University of Thessaly, several undergraduate and postgraduate courses of Biology, Genetics, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. His research interests include prediction of protein structure and function from the primary sequence, development of stochastic models (HMMs) for analyzing biological sequences, large-scale genome analyses, construction of biological databases, analysis of complex biological networks, development of methodology for genetic association and gene expression studies and methodology of meta-analysis. He has co-authored more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals (including Nature Communications, Bioinformatics, BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Genetics, Nucleic Acids Research, Proteins, Database, Genetic Epidemiology, Statistics in Medicine) which received more than 5400 citations (as per Google Scholar). He is also the author of the e-book "Bioinformatics" (in Greek), published by the Hellenic Academic Ebooks (Kallipos), which is currently being used as teaching material for Bioinformatics in several Greek Universities. He is reviewer for more than 40 international journals and member of the editorial board of BMC Research Notes, PLOS ONE and The Open Bioinformatics Journal. He is founding member and deputy chair of the Hellenic Society for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (HSCBB). He participates in several national and international consortia, including BMBS COST Action BM1405: Non-globular proteins - from sequence to structure, function and application in molecular physiopathology (NGP-NET), the ELIXIRgr node in which he is member of the steering committee and Training Coordinator and the international specialized protein resources network (SPRN).
