The Pennsylvania State Board of Education mandated the Career Education and Work (CEW) Standards for all public schools in 2006. These standards were established by regulations (22 Pa. Code Chapter 4) and took effect upon their publication in the Pennsylvania Bulletin on July 8, 2006.
The CEW standards are part of the State Board of Education's required education for all public school students in Pennsylvania. They are designed to help students develop skills to prepare them for the workforce and follow them through their K-12 education.
To support implementation, Smart Futures provides a K–12 career planning and portfolio platform that helps schools integrate the CEW Standards in both classroom and virtual settings.
Beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, CBSD will implement Smart Futures to support students in meeting this state requirement. All students must complete the high school Smart Futures lessons by the end of their junior year. Most will complete these lessons through the College and Career Readiness course. Students enrolled in CVA or CTC will be responsible for completing them independently. School Counselors, Special Education teachers, and Social Studies teachers are available to assist with any questions.
Students may log into their Smart Futures account at smartfutures.org
