After our first iteration of the design process, we spent time reflecting to improve our approach moving forward. We recognized that organization and project management were areas for improvement, so we created a Gantt chart to start, pictured below. This helped us visualize the deliverables for the semester and assign action items. We split up the second half of the semester into four different phases, each with several tasks. Our goal is to be more proactive for this iteration and stay ahead of the work that needs to get done.
To organize our reflection, we complete a wanted-did-learned table. We connected the aspects we wanted to learned, to what we actually did, and then what we learned from these actions. We felt that we followed the design process pretty closely, but there is still room for improvement. After discussing, we are particularly conscious of avoiding unnecessary assumptions. We want to ensure that we base our decisions on user feedback and actual data. We have learned a lot from the first iteration, and we would like to connect this to our actions in the second iteration.
We also spent time reflecting on our strengths and areas for improvement during the first iteration. Several key points came out of our conversations.
Brainstorming
We were happy with our approach to brainstorming and felt that it helped us generate useful ideas.
We used a combination of silent collaborative brainstorming and team time at the board.
Moving forward, we want to increase the quantity of ideas that we brainstorm to explore areas we haven't so far.
Communication and task completion
We feel that we have communicate fairly well as a team so far. We like meeting most days after class, because having set times to meet let's us check in and assign action items.
In terms of the tools we use, we have had some frustrations with Slack, and we prefer using Zoom for virtual meetings.
Organization and project management
We were not as effective as we would have liked at organization and project management during the first iteration. We felt that we did not have enough time to make key engineering decisions, because we did not plan ahead sufficiently. For the second iteration, we are focusing on effective time management to leave ourselves more time to brainstorm and pretotype new ideas. Clearly understanding the design requirements and key performance indicators early in the process will guide our decisions moving forward.
