Is the Library Closed?

The short answer is...NO!

The Lakers Library is NOT closed this fall. But, the way we offer services and materials will look a little bit different. Please read on to learn about how to access the library services and staff during our Hybrid Learning Model.

Can Students Drop into the Library?

Unfortunately, students may not drop into the library at this time. We will be hosting study halls and HomeBase/Lunches so the library is in use every block of the day. The Library is also no longer a shortcut between hallways as we must be able to use the time between blocks to clean all surfaces and ensure that people are safe. However...

We have created three or four in-person library time slots in each block.

If a student wants to come to the library to browse for books in person, receive research assistance, get some personal recommendations for books, etc. they may sign up for an in-person library time. Note that all juniors and seniors will be assigned to the library for a study hall, so they may also choose to use some of that time to access library services in person as opposed to signing up for a specific slot. Take a look at the "Scheduling and In Person Library Appointment" video to see how it's done.

How Can I Check Out Books? In person OR remotely.

See the above section for information on how to check books out in person.

Remote Checkout Options

There are two ways to request books for remote checkout. One option is for students to log into the Library Catalog and place holds on the titles they would like to check out.

Alternatively, students may use the Remote Checkout Book Request Form. All remote requests will be filled within 24 hours (or less).

Where will I pick up books checked out remotely, and how do I return or renew library materials?

Picking Up Books

Books requested remotely will be placed in our "Libraryside Pickup Area" in the hall outside the library for Hybrid Learners and Faculty/Staff. For remote learners, there will be a cabinet just outside the main doors to the building.

Returning Books

There will be three return bins to choose from. Two are located in the halls outside the library doors, and one is located on the sidewalk just outside the main doors to the building. All returned materials will be quarantined for one week before being checked in and re-shelved.

Renewing Books

To renew books or other library materials, simply send an email to Ms. Binder to request a renewal.

Summer Reading Challenge...extended

Some of you may have read some of the books on the summer reading challenge list. Others may have been interested in doing so, but maybe the summer got away from you (we get it)! So, we're extending the summer reading challenge through the month of September.

The reading challenge focused on reading for racial justice. Learn more about the challenge and see the list of reading options here. And enjoy!

What about research instruction?

As always, Ms. Binder is available and eager to come into classrooms to deliver research instruction. Teachers can send an email or stop by the library to discuss potential research lessons and collaborations. Ms. Binder will also be available for virtual research assistance for individual students. Students may simply send an email to Ms. Binder to schedule a virtual appointment.

Teachers: In addition to research instruction, Ms. Binder would love the opportunity to pop into classrooms and deliver instruction on how to access library services this year. This would be a brief, 15-minute presentation to walk students through the book checkout procedures, sign-up for in-person library time, conducting catalog searches, etc.

Digital Resources

Remember that our CHS Library also offers a wide range of digital/online tools and resources through our Library website. You can find many wonderful research databases and resources, online access to e-book and audiobook collections through the Vermont School Libraries Shared Digital Collection (on the Sora App), and much, much more!

To sum up...

We're excited to see you all and to continue to offer high quality library services and materials. Please reach out if you have questions, requests, concerns, or great ideas! Enjoy our displays (in windows facing the halls, and in the library for students who are able to come in person), ask for help and recommendations, and peruse the library website -- it's full of digital resources that you can access from anywhere!

Happy reading, happy learning, be safe, and we'll see you soon.
