Many students on campus will hold on-campus jobs throughout their time at Colby. For International students, they must follow Colby guidelines along with federal guidelines set by the United States government on employment for International students. See below for information on different kinds of employment at Colby.
International students can work up to 20 hours a week during an academic term with an on-campus job as per their F-1 visa status. However, Colby caps student working hours at 12 hours per week, so no on-campus jobs at Colby will pay more than 12 hours a week for any given job (excluding summer employment). You can hold more than one job per semester if you choose to do so, but your combined number of working hours a week should not exceed 12 hours.
To look for open positions, go to Workday and search "find student jobs." It will come up with a list of open positions on campus, and you can apply for as many as you would like. Most positions will require a resume and/or cover letter to apply. Though it is a good idea to look through Workday for opportunities, make sure to reach out to faculty, staff, and upperclassmen to see if they know of anything that may pique your interest!
There are various opportunities to work on campus over the summer if you choose to do so, from being a research assistant for a professor to working for different offices and initiatives. Every summer, a couple of hundred students choose to stay at Colby to work.
There are set times when students are allowed to move into and out of dorms at the beginning and end of every semester. At the beginning of the semester, dorms will open a couple of days before the first day of classes to give students time to move in and settle down. At the end of the semester, every student must be out of their dorm by 12:00 pm noon the day after the last day of finals. However, if you have a summer/academic year job on campus, you are eligible for pre-/post-boarding. Pre-boarding is when you are cleared to move in earlier than the intended move-in date before the start of the fall semester. Post-boarding is when you are cleared to stay longer than the designated move-out date for students at the end of the spring semester.
To be eligible for pre-boarding, you must be sponsored by an office or department that will cover the cost of your stay during those few weeks before the official semester begins. This generally refers to those involved with the First-Year Journey, such as FLI+INT student staff, COOT committee and leaders, Community Advisors, and Orientation Leaders. Fall athletes will also be brought to campus early as per instructions from their coach and team.
To be eligible for post-boarding, you must be sponsored by an office or department that will cover the cost of your stay for the few weeks before the official start of summer employment. This means that even if you have obtained a summer job on campus, you are not guaranteed post-boarding and must speak to your specific office/department about arranging your stay on campus.
