FLI Day is recognized at schools around the country on November 8th, in celebration of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. Learn more about the impact of the HEA and the history of First-Generation Celebration Day here. The FLI@Colby Program held the first FLI Day celebration on November 8th, 2019. Since, then, FLI Day at Colby has increased to a full week of recognition and celebration of the FLI identity and the FLI community.
This is a nation-wide public event hosted by the Center for First-Generation Student Success. The panel will feature five first-gen graduates who are now senior leaders among major companies and institutions, such as Disney, Sony, and Comcast. Here about their relatable and inspiring journeys, and join people from all over the country in this celebration of first-gen success!
FGLISstudents.org is hosting their first ever National Conference on November 8th. This conference is designed by FLI students, for FLI students and is entirely free. This could be a great opportunity to connect with FLI students at other institution. Learn more on their website and register by October 28th!
The First Gen Summit brings together over 200 students, faculty, and staff from institutions all over New England. Colby participated for the first time last year, and we are excited to be taking an even bigger group this year! We have reserved space for 12 students to go represent Colby at the Summit this year. All travel and logistics will be organized by the Program, so participation is free! If you are interested in going, please complete the interest form below by Wednesday, Oct 25th.
We’ll kick-off the week on campus with Campus-wide Awareness on Monday! The FLI@Colby team will be tabling in the Spa from 2-5pm, with swag to give away, trivia about FLI, and some educational resources as well. We highly encourage everyone who can to stop by and join us in building awareness of what it means to be first-gen and FLI.
November 8th is recognized by colleges and universities around the country as a day of celebration for first-gen and low/limited income students. The FLI@Colby Program has celebrated since 2019, and this year we would like to host a community dinner to bring together faculty, staff, and students for celebration and discussion. FLI Week also means it is time for FLI Formal. This year, the Formal will once again be held at the Greene Block + Studios in downtown Waterville, where there will be food, music, and photography. This year’s theme is yet to be announced by look forward for more news next week. Let’s celebrate in style!
