IF you have any questions regarding IB, please contact Maranda Thornburg at maranda.thornburg@cms.k12.nc.us
During the school year, students will have opportunities to complete their required service-learning actions as follows:
6th grade students will have the opportunity to complete 100% of their required actions at school.
7th grade students will have two opportunities during the first semester to complete required actions at school. They will need to complete the third required action independently.
There will also be opportunities for 6th and 7th grade students to assist 8th grade students with their community projects. These opportunities will be advertised through school announcements and ParentSquare during the first semester.
All 8th grade community projects must be completed by the end of Winter Break.
Any service-learning actions completed during the summer and submitted on the Summer Reflection Log will count toward a student's required total. Summer actions may also be used to fulfill requirements if a student is absent on the day of an in-school service-learning activity.
If you have any questions, please contact
Mrs. Thornburg (The Piedmont IB Coordinator) at maranda.thornburg@cms.k12.nc.us.
When participating in a community engagement activity, it is always a good idea to take photos of your experience. These photos can be used to document and reflect on your service-learning activities as part of the IB program.
Community engagement experiences will be documented through a dedicated reflection link and will be added to the student's IB Portfolio.
6th Grade Students: IB Portfolios will be created and set up during the first quarter.
7th Grade Students: Students will continue using the IB Portfolios they established during 6th grade to document their community engagement experiences.
8th Grade Students: Will complete a Community Project Process Journal and will complete reflections in their IB Portfolio as well.
For information, timelines, and updates regarding the Community Project, please visit the Community Project tab on this website.
Students do not log Service HOURS. We have moved to Community Engagement.
Complete 1 Action per semester and submit a reflection form. 2 Actions per year
Reflections will be updated in the student's IB Portfolio
Actions will be organized as a school, however students can choose to complete Individual Choice Activities in addition to the School-Wide Activities. The first action will be in October at Piedmont when we organize our Homeroom Community Engagement Week.
Family involvement in the community is still encouraged.
Recognition and incentives are available for students that go above and beyond the required 2 actions. .
2 School planned events - both will take place during first semester. The first will be an assembly to recognize the International Day of Peace in September and the second will be tied to the 8th grade Community Projects - with a presentation in homeroom classes from a team of 8th grade students. This will be scheduled in the 8th grade project presentation window before winter break begins.
Individual Choice Activities can be any events in the local community, supporting an 8th grade community project event, school advertised events outside of school - like a stream clean-up or a campus clean-up etc...or working at your place of worship with your athletic team or dance team etc...
