Good Morning 5th graders. I can't believe that it's time for summer break already. Congratulations to all of you on your DARE graduation. It has been an incredibly different year, and I have missed you all. This year has been a reminder that science and new discoveries are an impactful part of our would. Remember that science is everywhere and you should always stay curious. I hope that you enjoy your summer and wish you the best of luck in middle school next year. I will miss each of you.
Here are are some experiments that you might enjoy.

Good Morning my wonderful scientist. I can't believe that this is our last full week of school. It's been a different year for all of us, but I hope that you were able to continue learning and exploring science. To prepare for our virtual scavenger hunt we will review Matter. I've included a Mystery Science Link and some amazing videos that show that ice isn't the only thing that melts when it gets too hot.

Happy Monday, let's start the week by taking a virtual field trip with Nickelodeon to see how slime reacts in space. It's pretty cool. Thanks Mrs. Calkins, 5th grade teacher, for sharing this with us!

Happy Monday 5th Graders. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. This week we are going to learn more about heredity. I have uploaded a strange, but oddly satisfying video for you to watch. Watch the video then complete the inventory of traits survey to see what traits you've inherited from your dad or your mom.

Happy Monday 5th graders. We are continuing with Human Body Systems. The Mystery question for this week is "What do blind people see?" Learn about the parts of the eye and how it functions. This activity requires a special magnifying glass. I've included the link for a simple extension activity that you can do without any special supplies.

Here's a great video by Operation Ouch. It's all about how optical illusions can trick your brain and your eyes.

Hello my 5th grade scientist. Our Mystery for the week is "How do animals see in the dark?" This lesson helps to understand how our eyes work, focusing on the iris and the pupil. It may be a difficult to do the activity for this lesson because it requires a magnifying lens. You can still watch the video and see if you can find a way to create your own eye model without the lens. Go to "Extensions", then "activities" and "video" to watch 2 short videos that go along with the lesson.

Things a very different right now, but this is a great time to understand human impact on the earth. Think of some great things that may help the earth because we have to shelter in place for a little while.
I've uploaded a few links to help you celebrate Earth Day. Be sure to check out the Mystery Doug extras and try some of the activities that he suggests. Join the Earth Day live stream event today at 4pm. Learn about the history of earth day and some fun activities that you can try at home.

Welcome Back! I hope you enjoyed your spring break! We are continuing to learn about human body systems. This week's Mystery Science question is "How do biceps bulge?" Watch the video and then try the Robot Finger activity if you have the supplies. Take it a step further and make an entire hand. If you don't have the supplies it's ok. I've included a link with a simple extension activity that you can try.

Good morning my awesome 5th grade scientist. Check my home page for a special viewing of Mystery Doug at 1pm on 4/7. This week we are learning about human body systems. Mystery Science has some awesome videos that I know you will enjoy. Watch the first short about why our bodies need blood. Then do the lesson "How does your brain controls your body?" This is a fun video with very simple activities for you to try at home. I think you will find the "hole in your hand" activity very interesting. All you need is a sheet of paper to try it.

Hello my 5th grade scientist. I miss you all very much and hope that you are doing well. We are continuing our unit on traits and variation. Watch the Mystery Science Video "How long can people (and animals) survive in outer space?" Try the activity "Astronaut in training" and see what you discover. I have included a fun Mystery Doug for the week. Hope you enjoy it.

Hello all of my wonderful scientist. As we come to the close of the first week of our virtual science lab I want to tell you that I miss all of you. Remember that science is all around you. Take some time on this beautiful day to get outside and explore . Today is a great day to get outside and fly a paper airplane or a kite if you have one. What causes it to lift into the air? How can you make it go higher and farther? Roll a ball on the sidewalk and then in the grass to see the difference. These are great ways to learn and understand Newton's Law's of motion and words like speed, direction and friction. Keep a journal of the things that you discover. Send me an email if you have a question or if you would like to share anything about science.

Try this amazing airplane. I tried it with one class, but it was a little more complicated than I thought. I think it would be fun to try at home. All you need is a piece of paper, scissors and something to color with if you want to make it fancy. Try without frustration. Remember scientists don't always get it right the first, sometimes second or third time. Just keep trying.
