Good morning my young scientists. I cannot believe that we are the end of the 19-20 school year. What a different year it's been, and I've missed you all terribly. I hope you have a wonderful summer and continue learning. Remember science is all around us. It's in our homes, our bodies, our backyards and in the sky. Science is everywhere. As Mystery Doug would say, "Stay Curious." I can't wait to see you next school year as awesome 3rd graders.
Summer is just about here. It's time for ice cream and swimming pools, but it's also the time when we begin to see more snakes. Watch the video "Why do snakes shed their skin?" Click on extensions to see the optional activity because just like snakes humans shed skin too, just not all at once.

Good Morning my wonderful scientist. I can't believe that this is our last full week of school. It's been a different year for all of us, but I hope that you were able to continue learning and exploring science. To prepare for our virtual scavenger hunt we will review Matter. I've included a Mystery Science Link and some amazing videos that show that ice isn't the only thing that melts when it gets too hot.

Happy Tuesday, I hope you enjoyed your long Memorial Day Weekend. We will learn all about light this week. The mystery question is "What if there were no windows?" Watch the video and then try the activity. Learn the differences between the words transparent and opaque. Have fun and get creative with the materials that you use. Many of you won't have the materials in the video, but this is when science and your imagination can help you to discover something great.

Happy Monday, let's start the week by taking a virtual field trip with Nickelodeon to see how slime reacts in space. It's pretty cool. Thanks Mrs. Calkins, 5th grade teacher, for sharing this with us!

Good Morning 2nd graders. We are continuing our lessons on plant lifecycles. This week's mystery is "Do plants eat dirt?" Watch the video then try my modified root viewer activity.

Try the activity. You can use a ziploc bag or a plastic cup instead of the CD case if you don't have one. I have also included a really cool optional way to try this experiment.

Happy Monday 2nd graders. We will continue with our lesson on lifecycles by understanding that all living things have a lifecycle. This week's Mystery question is "Why do plants give us fruit?" Watch the video and then try this yummy experiment. You will need an adult to help you use a knife for cutting into fruit.
Good Morning 2nd grade scientists. We are beginning our unit on Lifecycles. I think it would be wonderful to start by learning about butterflies since they have such an amazing lifecycle. Watch the short video "Why are butterflies so colorful?", then do the activity that follows. If you can't print it's ok. Draw your own butterfly and experiment to find ways to make it flap its wings and fly.

Things a very different right now, but this is a great time to understand human impact on the earth. Think of some great things that may help the earth because we have to shelter in place for a little while.
I've uploaded a few links to help you celebrate Earth Day. Be sure to check out the Mystery Doug extras and try some of the activities that he suggests. Join the Earth Day live stream event today at 4pm. Learn about the history of earth day and some fun activities that you can try at home.

Hello and welcome back. We will finish up our lesson on Traits by watching the Mystery Science video "How long can people and animals survive in space?". Once you watch the video try the astronaut in training activity. Once you finish go to the Extensions tab. Click on Video to watch some cool clips of astronauts exercising in space.
Happy Monday 2nd Graders. Look at the Home Page for the link to see Mystery Doug Live. This week we are continuing with evolution and genetics. Our mystery this week is "How can you get more birds to visit a bird feeder?" Follow the link below to the mystery. Watch the video then try the activity. Use whatever materials you can find to make your own bird feeder. I would love to see a picture of what you create. Just send me an email.

Hello my 2nd grade scientists. I miss you all terribly! As we continue through evolution and genetics I hope you will enjoy this week's Mystery Science "What's the Best Way to Get Rid of Mosquitos". Watch the video and try the "Bug Off Activity". I have added a fun short from Mystery Doug for you to watch for this week.

Hello all of my wonderful scientist. As we come to the close of the first week of our virtual science lab I want to tell you that I miss all of you, and to keep exploring the world around you. Remember that science is all around you. Take some time on this beautiful day to get outside and explore. Pay attention to the animals and plants you see. What are some of their characteristics? Is the squirrel gray? How are the animals alike and different? Are they feathered? Do the animals lay eggs? Don't forget about insects and plants because they have traits too. Keep a journal of all that you find. Send me an email if you have a question or if you would like to share anything about science that you would like to share.
