Good morning my young scientists. I cannot believe that we are the end of the 19-20 school year. What a different year it's been and I've missed you all terribly. I hope you have a wonderful summer and continue learning. Remember science is all around us. It's in our homes, bodies, backyards and in the sky. Science is everywhere. As Mystery Doug would say, "Stay Curious." I can't wait to see you next school year as awesome 2nd graders.
Bees! Bees! Everywhere. Watch this short video to learn how bees make honey and then do the short extension activity. Be careful not to get too close. We need bees to help our environment, but their stings are certainly no fun!

Good Morning my wonderful scientist. I can't believe that this is our last full week of school. It's been a different year for all of us, but I hope that you were able to continue learning and exploring science. To prepare for our virtual scavenger hunt we will review Matter. I've included a Mystery Science Link and some amazing videos that show that ice isn't the only thing that melts when it gets too hot.

Happy Monday, let's start the week by taking a virtual field trip with Nickelodeon to see how slime reacts in space. It's pretty cool. Thanks Mrs. Calkins, 5th grade teacher, for sharing this with us!

Good Morning my wonderful 1st graders. We are continuing our lessons on lifecycles. Today you will learn about the lifecycle of a frog. Watch the short video and then complete follow the link to do complete your frog lifecycle worksheet. If you can't print the worksheet, no worries. Just use the information to create your own unique frog lifecycle project. Send me a picture or video of what you create. Happy learning.

Happy Monday 1st graders. This week we will begin to understand that all plants and animals have lifecycles. I love butterflies, but I must admit that caterpillars and other worms for that matter kind of creep me out. But I know that if I want to enjoy seeing those beautiful butterflies in my yard I have to learn to love caterpillars first. Follow the link below to create your own butterfly lifecycle project. Get creative and use any materials that you can find. Just about anything you can find will work, even things like gummy worm for caterpillars and jelly beans for the eggs.

Good morning my wonderful 1st grade scientist. This week's Mystery is "What do sunflowers do when you're not looking?" Read the book "Sunshine and Sunflowers". Go to "Preview the Optional Activity" and try it. Be sure to go to "extensions" at the end of the slide to watch amazing videos of plants reacting to light and water.

Things a very different right now, but this is a great time to understand human impact on the earth. Think of some great things that may help the earth because we have to shelter in place for a little while.
I've uploaded a few links to help you celebrate Earth Day. Be sure to check out the Mystery Doug extras and try some of the activities that he suggests. Join the Earth Day live stream event today at 4pm. Learn about the history of earth day and some fun activities that you can try at home.

Hello everyone and welcome back. I hope you enjoyed your spring break. This week we will finish up basic plant and animal needs. We will learn how the structure of plants and their environment help them to survive. Watch the video "Why don't trees blow in the wind?" and then try the activity. If you don't have the supplies for the activity it's ok just go outside and be a field scientist. Take a piece of paper and watch the trees as they blow in the wind. Write down what you see and draw a picture.
Happy Monday 1st Graders. I really miss seeing all of you. We are continuing our lesson on plant and animal needs. Watch the Mystery Science video "Why are Polar Bears White?" When you get to the Moth Hide and Seek activity skip to the part where you can make your own camouflage moth. Listen to Doug's instructions and try it on your own. If you can't print the moth template its ok. Just be imaginative and make your own. Make several if you can, hide them around the house or even outside and see if anyone can find them.
Hello my 1st Grade Scientist. I miss all of you. We are moving on to the needs of plants and animals and environment. If you haven't done they mystery for Week 2, start there and try the Best Beak activity. This week is a read along, "Why Do Baby Ducks Follow Their Mothers." Be sure to check out the activity, "What's Going On?" I have added a fun short for this week. I hope you enjoy it.

Hello all of my wonderful scientist. As we come to the close of the first week of our virtual science lab I want to tell you that I miss all of you. Remember that science is all around you. Take some time on this beautiful day to get outside and explore . Play and dig in the dirt/soil and continue to be a soil detective. Does anything live there, earthworms, ants, etc? Are plants growing? How does it look and feel? Remember to wash your hands after exploring. Keep a journal of the things that you discover. Send me an email if you have a question or if you would like to share anything about science.
