Good morning my young scientists. I cannot believe that we are the end of the 19-20 school year. What a different year it's been and I've missed you all terribly. I hope you have a wonderful summer and continue learning. Remember science is all around us. Its in our homes, bodies, backyards and in the sky. Science is everywhere. As Mystery Doug would say, "Stay Curious." I can't wait to see you next school year as awesome 4th graders.
Summer is just about here. It's time for ice cream and swimming pools, but it's also the time when we begin to see more snakes. Watch the video "Why do snakes shed their skin?" Click on extensions to see the optional activity because just like snakes humans shed skin too, just not all at once.

Good Morning my wonderful scientist. I can't believe that this is our last full week of school. It's been a different year for all of us, but I hope that you were able to continue learning and exploring science. To prepare for our virtual scavenger hunt we will review Matter. I've included a Mystery Science Link and some amazing videos that show that ice isn't the only thing that melts when it gets too hot.

Happy Tuesday, I hope you enjoyed your long Memorial Day Weekend. This week we will continue with forces and motion. This week's mystery question is "Why can't airplanes fly into space?" Watch the short video and then follow Doug's directions to make your own airplane. When you are done test it out. Find out how to make it go farther and faster. I'm also including the Amazing Paper Airplanes youtube link if you would like to try a more challenging airplane.

Happy Monday, let's start the week by taking a virtual field trip with Nickelodeon to see how slime reacts in space. It's pretty cool. Thanks Mrs. Calkins, 5th grade teacher, for sharing this with us!

Good Morning 3rd graders. We are continuing with Forces and Motions. The Mystery this week is "Can you build a chain reaction machine?" Watch the video then try the experiment. If you don't have the supplies go to the "Extensions" section to see some ideas of things you can use to build your own chain reaction machine. Send me pictures or videos of what you create.

Happy Monday 3rd graders. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. We are continuing with our lesson on Forces and Motion. Earlier during the year you learned all about energy transfer. Motion and energy transfer are all connected. When a force acts on an object it will result in a change in speed/ and or direction. This week's question is "Could you knock down a building using only dominos?" Watch the video and then try the chain reaction machine challenge. The great thing about this experiment is that you can use any materials that you can find to create your chain reaction machine. We will continue this next week, so start your plans this week and see how much you can add to it for next week. Send me a video of you can.
Good Morning 3rd grade scientists. We are continuing with our lessons on forces and motion. Our mystery this week is "How could you win a tug of war against a bunch of adults?" Learn all about balanced and unbalanced forces. When you're done with the video try the "hopper" activity. I think you will enjoy it. Look on the home page for the short Mystery Doug video for the week. Be sure to watch the extras. Happy learning!
Things a very different right now, but this is a great time to understand human impact on the earth. Think of some great things that may help the earth because we have to shelter in place for a little while.
I've uploaded a few links to help you celebrate Earth Day. Be sure to check out the Mystery Doug extras and try some of the activities that he suggests. Join the Earth Day live stream event today at 4pm. Learn about the history of earth day and some fun activities that you can try at home.

Hello and welcome back. I hope you enjoyed your spring break. This week we are beginning a new unit on Forces and Motion. You will learn about changes in speed and direction from force. Watch the Mystery Science Video "How is your body similar to a car?" Try the activity if you have the supplies available. If you don't this is a great time to be a scientist. Find whatever materials you can find around the house and make your own version of the Twist-O-Matic Tester. Draw your own picture if you can't print the pages. I'm sure you can create something amazing.

Hello all of my wonderful 3rd graders. I miss you very much. Please check out the home page for a special announcement from Mystery Doug. This week we will finish our lesson on landforms. Watch the video "Will a mountain last forever?" It might be difficult to do the Sugar Shake activity because you will need sugar cubes. Go to the "Extras" and try the Plant Walk activity instead. It's very simple. You just go outside and look to find plants that are growing in places they don't belong. I spotted a plant growing out of a tiny crack in the brick on my front porch and a sapling (a baby tree) growing out of a rock near my pond. If you find something interesting take a picture and share it with me.

Hello all of my 3rd grade scientist. I miss you all terribly and hope you are doing well. This week we are continuing landforms. Watch the Mystery Science video "Could a Volcano Pop Up Where You Live?" and then try the activity "Mapping Volcanos". If its too much for you to print try drawing your own map and follow along with Doug or just watch the video. I have included a link for a fun Mystery Doug video for you to watch.

Hello all of my wonderful scientist. As we come to the close of the first week of our virtual science lab I want to tell you that I miss all of you. Remember that science is all around you. Take some time on this beautiful day to get outside and explore. Landforms aren't just about volcanos. We are in the Piedmont Region, in between the oceans and the mountains. Do you live near a stream, a pond or lake? Remember that these are fresh bodies of water, which make up only a small percentage of earth's water. Take some time to discover. Keep a journal of the things that you discover. Send me an email if you have a question or if you would like to share anything about science.
