The Tiny Seed
by: Eric Carle
Spring blooms and green grass is sprouting up ALL AROUND US!
So, today we are going to join in the party and plant grass seeds AND create our own "Grassy-head dolls" !
Supplies needed :
Plastic or paper cup
gardening soil or top soil, (even yard dirt).
grass seed- These are TINY SEEDS that grow quickly and are thrilling to watch grow- creating a head of grassy hair for your funny faced cups!
saucer or paper plate to catch excess water.
Black and colored permanent markers- to create a funny face on the outside of your cup FIRST!
OR sissors, paper, glue and markers to paste faces on cups.(see tutorial).
*Be creative and don't forget to add eyebrows, eyes, eyelashes, nose, lips to complete your "Grassy-head doll" face. You can even add some red or pink for lips and fun colors for eyes!
Directions for planting:
AFTER you have drawn or cut your funny faces on cups, its time to plant!
Poke a small hole in bottom of cup and place in saucer to drain excess water.(You might need to have an adult to help you poke the hole).
Fill cup half way with top soil or gardening dirt.
Sprinkle a generous handful of grass seeds onto the top of soil and push gently into the soil. DO NOT PUSH TOO DEEP. Just enough to cover the seeds. You can also fill the cup half full with soil, add seeds and then COVER with a SMALL amount of soil.
WATER daily( but dont OVER WATER) Just enough to make the soil wet.
Place cup and saucer in SUNNY window so that your seeds are getting SUN !
Finally, BE PATIENT! It may take TWO WEEKS or more to sprout GRASS!
