Welcome to the K-2 Fairy Tale STREAM Club where we will create projects based on Fairy Tales!
Purpose
Elon Park Elementary School’s Fairy Tale STREAM Club is dedicated to empowering students to be independent problem-solvers and creators. Students will view STREAM activities about science, technology, research, engineering, arts and math then create their own project which will require them to be constructive, creative, and think strategically.
Club Time
Club Time will be Asynchronous so students can do the Club Activity at any time before 11:00 on Wednesdays.
Students will view a Wakelet Link listed below for each Club Meeting Day which will have a video reading of a Fairy Tale book with an engineering twist and a description of a STEM Challenge.
Students will gather the materials needed with parent support and follow the directions to create their own project under caregiver supervision.
Students can ask questions about it or they can share their project if they would like to do so during our live Zoom Club Meeting.
Mrs. Maples' Club Office Hours will be on Wednesdays of Week 2 of the Connect Schedule at 2:00.
Starting on March 17, the Club will meet from 11:00 - 12:00 and no longer meet at 2:00.
You will find any materials that you'll need at the Wakelet link for each activity.
Dates of Office Hours to share projects:
January 20
February 3
February 17 (No Club because it is a CMS "Early Release" Day)
March 3
March 17
March 31
April 21 (Not on this day due to Ms.Maples being out of school.)
May 5
The Club will meet on Zoom on Week 2 of Connect Schedule on Wednesdays at 11:00.
If you would like to do a STEM Challenge, click on the link and choose an object to build befor our Club meeting at 11:00 on May 5: https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Nature-Challenges.pdf
Could you create a new story about one of your favorite Fairy Tale Characters as if he or she would use the object that you built? For example, if you built a new raft, how would a Fairy Tale Character use it? Or, if you built a new house, how would the Fairy Tale Character spend their time? You could create a video of yourself describing how a Fairy Tale Character would use the object that you build and send it to Mrs. Maples.
If you build one of the objects, please email a picture or video to lisa.maples@cms.k12.nc.us.
You can share your object that you built at our LIVE Club Meeting at 11:00 on May 5.
Thank you for participating in the Fairy Tale STREAM Club in 2021!
March 31 and April Fairy Tale STREAM Choice Activities:
There are 20 different Fairy Tale STREAM tasks in a Slide Show below that you could choose to do and show at our March 31 meeting. Please pick two of your favorite activities to show us at our meeting. If possible, try to read the book that would match the fairy tale!
On April 21, we will not have a Club Zoom Meeting, but you can send Mrs. Maples a picture of more projects that you may create on or before April 21 using the choices in the slide show below. You can email Mrs. Maples your pictures of your Fairy Tale STREAM Projects at lisa.maples@cms.k12.nc.us.
Tap on the RED Fairy Tale STREAM Choices below to see 20 different Fairy Tale STREAM Activities that you can choose from or create your own challenge.

Rapunzel
Essential Question: Can you build a tower and help Rapunzel get out of the tower safely?
Rapunzel is stuck in the tower. She needs to escape. Can you use the items in Rapunzel’s Tower to help her get down safely?
What different ways are there to get out of the tower? Could you create something to help Rapunzel fly, jump or climb down safely, or is there another way? Maybe a clever slide or parachute is how she escapes. Maybe she can fly away on a paper airplane or build some ladders to get down. It is up to you!
Why not see how high you can build a tower out of paper, LEGOS or even hard spaghetti noodles! You could be a structural engineer with your skills!
Use the following to build something to help her get out of the tower. These are just suggestions – just use items you have available.
• Paper or cards
• Tape
• Scissors
• Popsicle sticks
• Balloons
• Plastic / paper cups • Paper clips
• Wooden skewers
• Markers / pens
Legos
Click on the Wakelet link to hear the story and see directions and an example project.
Have fun and be ready to show our Club what your design looks like and be able to test it for us to see on our Zoom Call at 11:00.

Jack and the Beanstalk
Essential Question:
Can you help Jack get down the beanstalk by designing a parachute?

Your parachute must be made from some type of paper product.
Be sure to include string or some other way to attach the parachute to Jack.
Materials: Materials
Napkins
Coffee filters or other paper
String
Paperclips
Please click on the Wakelet link to listen to the modern version of "Jack and the Beanstalk" and see all of the directions. There is a PDF for you to click on to see pictures of an example parachute and some sheets of paper that will guide you on creating then testing your parachute.

Goldilocks and The Three Bears
Your Goal: Make a chair long enough for the three bears to sit on!
Be sure to listen to the video of the new version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" at the Wakelet link below and read the directions in the next link after the video.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears Wakelet Link
Goldilocks has broken the bears' chair and eaten their porridge. She needs to make it up to them. They need a special chair for their video call. Could you help? Could you make a chair that they can all sit on together? It needs to be comfortable and strong. Don’t forget to test it to make sure it is just right!
TO DO:
In this activity, you will act as engineers in order to help Goldilocks build a chair that seats ALL the bears at once.
Identify the problem to be solved, talk about what the characters need and come up with some ideas. Then start designing a solution!
Think about special features. What would make the chair comfortable, easy to get into and useful for their meeting?
Build, test and improve a design and then join the Zoom Call on February 3 at 2:00 to demonstrate how your chair design works, telling what you did and what you used.
You are now working just like real engineers!
