Physical Education 1 or ROTC is required for graduation. Additionally, students enrolled in the Marching Band who complete additional requirements can now use their band course to satisfy this graduation requirement. Other PE electives listed below will not meet the one unit requirement for graduation.
For these courses, a CHS Athletic Physical is required to ensure that students are physically able to participate. Students must have a physical dated on or after April 1.
Sports Fitness - 1 Unit - Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: PE 1 and Coach's Approval
This course is designed to improve physical fitness levels for athletes through learning and practicing various strength and conditioning exercises. Weight training using both free weights and resistance machines will be an integral part of the class. Students will also be exposed to the facts concerning proper diet, fitness, and exercise. This class will meet the needs of athletes for pre/post season conditioning. This class does not meet the graduation requirement for PE.

Personal Health and Wellness is designed to help students develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to promote wellness, maintain health, and prevent disease. This course covers a comprehensive range of health topics in compliance with the South Carolina Comprehensive Health Education Law (Act 437) that include reproductive health, pregnancy prevention, and sexually transmitted disease along with consumer health, environmental health, growth and development, nutritional health, personal health prevention and control of diseases and disorders, safety and accident prevention, substance use and abuse, dental health, and mental and emotional health. In addition, Erin’s Law, Ronald Rouse’s Law, and Gavin’s Law are embedded within the curriculum. Parents have the option to exempt their child from reproductive-pregnancy prevention instruction. This course concentrates on individual skills and development, as well as, team concepts. Emphasis is placed on competence in each activity. Students may participate in basketball, softball, volleyball, badminton, team handball, and tennis. Physical fitness is an integral part of this course. Students will participate in various fitness activities and fitness tests. Each student will be required to develop a personal fitness plan. Students electing to take PE 1 year long must alternate with Women/Men’s Ensemble.

Special Olympics Unified Sports® is an inclusive sports program. It combines students with and without intellectual disabilities (ID) for sports and fitness activities. This class provides opportunities for students of different abilities to train and practice together as a team. CHS is a Unified School, empowering youth with and without ID to change the world through sports. It uses sport to promote social inclusion. Students with and without ID both benefit from having Unified Sports in their school. They make friends and develop social and emotional skills. It creates inclusive learning experiences for all.
