The next part of the excursion takes the students to the traditional lands of the Yawuru. The Yawuru are an Australian Indigenous community of the Kimberly region in Western Australia.
On a beach in Broome the students begin a search of Vardna's friend, Yari. They soon discover that Yari is a whale and she needs help. She has a little milbi jimbu that belongs in Butchulla country. Milbi is turlte in Butchalla language and jimbu is egg in Yawuru language. As Yari is soon to give birth herself, she asks the students to take the egg to K'gari (Fraser Island).
Morgan played by Lucia
I have really enjoyed the experience of this play because of the originality of its story line and how I got to work together with my friends, the main cast, and the musicians. I love my scene because it is fun and has a magical tone to it which is threaded throughout the whole play.
Alex played by Audrey
My character is shy and sweet. Preparing for our performance has been lots of fun although there have been many challenges like speaking loud enough and looking at the audience instead of who you're actually talking to. Learning my lines was easy, since I only have so many (6 to be exact). I hope you enjoy our show.
Evan played by Ivy
The school production is where you express yourself in the character's body. I liked playing the part of Evan because she is naïve and it was fun to be someone I’m not. I like the Arts because you express yourself in many different ways. Acting to me is where I fill the space with emotions and actions.
Jessie played by Harper
My role is Jessie who is bossy, and has a mean personality. I had to learn my lines which was a challenge, but I was able to with a bit of help. I also had to act in a mean and bossy way. Rehearsing for the play was really fun and I can’t wait to get up on the stage and perform for you all.
Sam played by Isobel
I have really enjoyed being a part of this play because it has been fun and exciting. As the character of Sam, I had to be sporty. Learning this role was a bit difficult at fist but after memorising my lines, it became easier and a lot more enjoyable. I found pacing and voice projection the most challenging part of my role.
Charlie played by Alex
It has been really fun learning the role of Charlie. I feel some pressure because I deliver the first line of our entire scene. I have learnt to just try my hardest and focus, which has helped a lot. Learning my lines and practising them has been easy, Some of the my challenges include speaking loud enough and looking at the audience when I deliver my lines.
Yari played by Theo
It was quite hard to be the whale in this scene. There were a lot of lines I needed to learn and I needed to speak really loudly. On the stage, when I was talking to someone I had to learn to speak to the audience not directly to the other characters.
Beach cricketers played by Sid, Evan, Raff, Hugh, Angus, Noah, Jasper CE, and Harry.
As the beach cricketers, we are very excited to do our part in front of everyone. We are playing cricket in the sand because it is a very Aussie thing to do. We have liked doing our rehearsals because we get to play act cricket and sync our moves like we are playing a game.
Sandcastle makers played by; Chloe, Reilly, Ilka
We have enjoyed working together on this scene and entwining other, smaller actions into this setting. Our part as sandcastle builders may not be a large focus, but it is nice to know that we are helping create a beach setting . We hope that everyone enjoys watching it as much as we have done working on it and now performing.
Sun loungers played by Laz, Jasper C, Finn and Sol.
We sun loungers are excited about our role in this play because we get to work together and put on a good show. Even though we are only playing the minor part of sun loungers on the beach, it is still important for the scene. It is cool to think that we will be performing in front of our parents and relatives. We also get to sing and dance.
Guitar played by Hugh.
I have been an enthusiastic guitar player since 2017. I have lessons for playing classical guitar with the Suzuki method. I am playing electric guitar in the song ‘Part of History’ and acoustic guitar for ‘Starry Night’.
Bass played by Jasper CE.
I have been playing bass since 2017 and love it. I am playing bass In the "Part of History" song. It has been great being a part of the band for our class and I am looking forward to performing in the production.
Piano played by Noah.
I’ve played piano since the start of 2017 and have been passionate ever since. I tend to specialise in the classical fields. I am playing a part in the song ‘Part Of History’, and playing a melody in ‘Starry Night’.
Violin played by Ilka.
I’ve been playing the violin since grade two and been performing with the school’s string ensemble since grade three. I really enjoy playing the song and it’s nice to know that it was made by other students in the school.
Keyboard played by Chloe.
I’ve been playing piano for a while. I can’t remember for how long! I have a great piano teacher and am really happy to be playing for you! It has been an enjoyable experience being part of the 6GB band for this scene.
Ukulele played by Reilley.
I learnt to play the ukulele at school during music lessons. I wanted to play this instrument in the class band for the 'Part of History' song in our scene. I was happy and grateful to be given the opportunity to play the ukulele
Drums played by Evan
I have been playing drums since 2019
with the school drumming teacher at his house. I really like drums and at every opportunity I get to share my talent with the school, I take advantage of it and play them. The production has given me an opportunity to perform which I am happy to do.
Students of 6GB would like to thank the following students for writing the Part of History song for our scene.
Lucinda Lourey (4KD)
Iggy Jones (4KD)
Albert Emmerick (4KD)
Whale animation and beach scene created by Jasper C.
I loved creating the animation for our scene. I worked on it for a long period trying to get the animation matching the script for this scene. I produced this animation using my Ipad.
We thank Dianne Appleby for the use of this song and its Yawuru language content.
Yawuru people have always danced and sung their culture in traditional lands around the town of Broome.
Yawuru jarndu, Yawuru jarndu… Oh Yawuru wamba
Yawuru jarndu, Yawuru jarndu … Oh Yawuru wamba
Nyamangany buru nyamba ngarrungunil
(translates as Yawuru woman, Yawuru man. These are the people of our land)
