Graduation Requirements

According to the Georgia Department of Education, students must have a minimum of 23 credits in order to graduate. Of those 23 credits, students in Clayton County high schools must meet the following requirements:

Promotion Rule:

In order for students to be promoted to the next grade, the following minimum number of credits must be earned:

  • From 9th to 10th grade= 5 credits;

  • From 10th to 11th = 11 credits;

  • From 11th to 12th grade = 17 credits.

Student must take and pass the following:

  • 1-credit of Health and Personal Fitness

  • 3-required electives from CTAE, Fine Arts, or Foreign Language courses

  • 3-additional courses (may be core or non-core electives)

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Graduation requirements for Clayton County Public Schools include attendance, required units of credit, and passing state-required graduation tests.

Middle School Credit

  1. Unit credit may be awarded for courses offered in the middle grades that meet the 9-12 GPA requirements.

  2. A student is classified as a high school student after the official entry date for the ninth grade.

  3. Credits for each successfully completed high school course will receive a numeric average on the high school transcript.

  4. Units of credit awarded in middle school are not included in the high school grade point average (GPA) and will not receive quality points.

High School Diploma

Students must meet diploma requirements in three areas: assessments, courses, and credits.

  • Assessments: All students must take the Georgia Milestones End of Course (EOC) assessments in Ninth Grade Language Arts, American Literature, Algebra I, Geometry, United States History, Economics, Physical Science, and Biology. These students must pass the course to meet graduation requirements.

  • Courses: Students must complete and pass specific EOC course requirements as outlined by the graduation rule.

  • Credits: Students must earn 23 units as a minimum state requirement for graduation. Additional requirements may be established by the local district.

Graduation Exercise

All students must meet all requirements for the high school diploma, the certificate of attendance, or the transition diploma before participating in graduation exercises.

  • Social Studies* (3 units)

  • CTAE and/or Fine Arts and/or Foreign Language (3 units)

  • Electives (4 units)



TOTAL UNITS (minimum) 23 and take required Standardized tests in designated courses
