Celebrating the life and legacy of the late, Rev. Jesse Jackson on today.
Born Jesse Burns in Greenville, South Carolina on October 8, 1941 to Helen Burns, a 17 year old unwed high school student and Noah Robinson, her older married neighbor, young Jesse took the surname Jackson from his adopted father, Charles Jackson.
Jackson became a star high school quarterback and earned a football scholarship at the University of Illinois in 1959.
Jackson’s introduction to the Movement came in 1965 when he traveled to Selma, Alabama to join in the campaign for voting rights. While there Jackson met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the man who would launch his career as a national civil rights leader.

Executive Functioning: Organizational skills
Developing early organization skills supports students’ ability to manage materials, follow routines, and engage in learning with confidence and independence.
B-SS 1: Use effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills
National School Counseling Week (NSCW) 2026 will be celebrated from Monday, February 2, to Friday, February 6, 2026, focusing on how school counselors help students thrive, with the theme "School Counseling: Helping Students Thrive"
Sequencing is an important executive functioning skill that helps kindergarten and first-grade students understand order, stay organized, and follow directions. When children practice sequencing, they learn to think about what happens first, next, and last, which supports attention, planning, and self-control. Pairing sequencing with story recall strengthens memory and comprehension, helping students retell events, reflect on actions, and understand cause and effect. These skills support both academic learning and behavior, as students learn to pause, think, and make thoughtful choices rather than acting impulsively.
Personal space is a key social-emotional skill that helps children feel safe, calm, and respected. Understanding personal space teaches students to recognize their own body boundaries and respect the boundaries of others. By connecting personal space to sequencing, students learn how to respond appropriately in social situations—first noticing when someone is too close, next choosing a safe strategy such as stepping back or using words, and last restoring comfort for everyone. This connection helps children build self-awareness, empathy, and positive social interactions.

Why Self-Control Matters for Your Child’s Success
Self-control is more than just good behavior—it’s a key part of executive functioning, the brain’s “management system” that helps children plan, focus, and make good decisions. When kids practice self-control, they strengthen skills like organization, problem-solving, and working toward goals—all essential for school and life success. Encouraging routines, setting clear expectations, and modeling calm responses at home can help your child build these lifelong skills.

Technology & Parental Controls
TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat... and all the other chats. Technology has become a great part of the evolution of cellphones. Parents have a big task of trying to keep up the new age. Have you had dinner this week without devices?
Check out the Common Sense Media (see below), which is a great source of information about technology. The team reviews movies, games, and television shows for age appropriateness. When in doubt, do not introduce cellphones to your child. Your child should not know more about the use of the devices than the parents/guardians.
