The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) offers a variety of resources and conferences that teachers can attend. They range from webinars to several-day conferences that teachers from all over the United States attend. This particular seminar will address the teaching practice of 'learning through discovery. The students are presented with a phenomenon and then must figure out the science behind it. Learning this way really gives a teacher multiple times/ways to provide meaningful feedback that will help the students reach their goal and learn the science.
This webinar was so cool, not to mention free! Not only did he focus on how he uses Kahoot for formatitive assessment, he talked about instant feedback the site provides to him as a teacher and his students. Students can see what questions they missed, and where there may be gaps in their learning. Kahoot is unique because although the site is giving a quiz, the students view it as more of a game, so they are motivated to get questions right in order to win.
The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) is a national organization committed to the improvement of mathematics teacher education. This organization offers conferences as well as membership for teachers. It holds conferences at least annually and also provides its members with monthly e-mails which provide 'best practice' tips for helping students learn and achieve in Math.
This webinar series is put on by American Educational Research Association. This series of webinars will collaborate with 11 other institutions and will be a series of workshops funded by the National Science Foundation. It seeks to promote research expertise in the applications of using STEM education. This webinar would help my problem of practice by showing me what other research is being done by educators that also teach STEM classes.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) offers a wide range of professional development resources to improve teaching and pedagogy, including teaching practices on implementing college and career readiness standards. These opportunities help not only math but science and STEM teachers as well with a broad range of subjects.
The Nebraska Association of Teachers of Science (NATS) is a great local resource to use. They are continually putting together conferences, webinars, and other materials that Nebraska Science teachers can use. They have virtual conferences, as well as in-person field trips to help bring real science into the classrooms. This has been helpful for my teaching, as well as my problem of practice because all the activities are aligned with state standards.
This virtual conference is being put on by Zoetis, and LPS instead of the annual science fair this year. Students have a chance to create a tee shirt as well as other STEAM-related projects. This would help teachers connect concepts throughout all content areas.
