Snowman Symmetry

When things have the same or equal parts on both sides of a dividing line, we say the object has symmetry. Today, let's have some fun cutting out a snowman and giving it a symmetrical look. When our final snowman and tree show up the same on both sides of our dividing line, our picture will have symmetry. Do you notice one thing in our picture that DOESN'T have symmetry? Symmetry can be found all around us. Once we recognize it, we begin to see this math concept all around us!

What You'll Need:

  1. 2 Pieces of Paper that are different colors.

  2. Scissors

  3. Pencil

  4. Glue Stick

Step 1:

Find 2 pieces of paper that are 2 different colors. White and black will give a look of a moonlit shadow, but any dark and light colors will do.

Step 2:

Cut both pieces of paper in half.

Step 3:

Tape together a light and dark piece on top of each other.

Step 4:

Draw your snowman, tree, and moon on one side of the taped together sheets. Make sure your paper is facing sideways before you start sketching. Then cut out your shapes.

Step 5:

Tape together your remaining halves of paper and arrange your snowman and tree shapes on either side of your dividing line.

Step 6:

Use a glue stick to glue down your shapes and hang up your symmetry project for all to see. Ask your family if they can tell you about symmetry. If not, show them the symmetry in your picture!
