The Egg Drop Challenge

Can you create a way to protect an egg from breaking when it is dropped from a specific height?

Choose items around your house that you think will cushion your egg on its fall. Here's a few ideas to get you started:

  • Eggs

  • Zip Lock baggies

  • Cups

  • Bags

  • Water

  • Ice

  • Paper towels

  • Cereal

  • Flour

  • Tissues

  • Packing material

  • Old t-shirts

  • Styrofoam

  • String

  • So much more!!!

Step 1:

Consider using zip lock bags to hold the materials that will pad your eggs. Build a few of your ideas before you try your drop. If you have a different idea about how to protect your egg, go for it! Be creative and think like a scientist.

Step 2:

Make a prediction on which baggie or egg container will work the best. A prediction is a smart guess on what you think will happen next.

Step 3:

Choose a reasonable height to drop all eggs. Consider doing your experiment outside. This could get messy!

Step 4:

Drop each bag or container from the chosen height and see if your prediction was right. Did any of them work? Why do you think they were successful or not?

Step 5:

Make adjustments: change your designs if your eggs broke. What could you do to improve on your original ideas? Finally, try your drops again using your new ideas!
