The concepts of my exhibition revolve around the idea of the presence of time and emotion. The feeling and the complexity of the emotions that a person would feel as they continue to experience life. Be it the future, present, or past there is a certain strong emotion that a person would feel and I wanted to create what I felt like showing a sense of that emotion with my paintings. For this to work I needed to create artworks that I can sympathize with so that I feel like it's a working and complete artwork. In the majority of my artworks I tend to use techniques which reflect me and how I view my memories. For the materials I used oil painting, acrylic, and charcoal. While using oil paint I use the impasto technique which makes use of thick paints as well as a palette knife to create textures that a paintbrush wouldn't be able to replicate. As for the charcoal painting I used a charcoal stick and a charcoal pencil while making use of the kneaded eraser for the highlights and a spreader to blend the charcoal and create more texture and more complex light and shadows. As for acrylic I used basic techniques of water and brush without the paints overlapping for the most part.
My painting Eternal Sunset shows the idea of a constant rise and fall of a state of mind and how fast things go and disappear. It shows the negative and positive emotion in a state of mind and I want to show the beauty in both its rise and fall in a painting. I made the painting with oil in canvas while employing impasto techniques where I tried to replicate from another artist named Leonid Afremov. I was inspired by his technique in his painting due to the color palette as well as the way his palette knife moved through the painting to create a serene and calming painting. I believe I created an artwork that was able to please the audience. Some of the challenges I faced during the creation of this painting were the colors and the order they were placed in the painting. As the impasto techniques make use of thick paints and dark colors and it tends to destroy the purity of lighter shades of colors.
Another painting called Life in a Film shows the idea of a person with many regrets in his life giving a chance to edit his life to perfection. If his life was a film, then he can live through it again. In this painting I used acrylic paint on canvas. For the subject in the middle of the painting I used a silk screen print which I painted over with black acrylic paint. I then created scenes with a paintbrush putting detail and a grey background which is metallic. One of the challenges in this painting was creating the print. As it was my first time using the print I wasn't aware of the challenges and difficulties of making the print, especially knowing the amount of detail that was gonna show up after doing the print.
A third artwork is a charcoal painting which talks about the little things you miss as you go through life. The concept is based on a song by Daniel Caesar named Streetcar. The way I interpreted it was using a person going through a ride to find their happiness and knowing that you'll get there and relishing the moments as they pass by.
The way I want to arrange my exhibition is by the color scheme of each painting. Each painting I feel is like a phase in life and I feel they are best understood when they are placed like a frame. Side by side as if they are different phases in a selection of movies.
