From the Subject Report:
Category 1 (Literature):
Range: Over-reliance on white Western authors, but increasing use of African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Australasian, and South American literature is encouraging.
Genre: Prose is most popular, but thoughtful poetry analyses are seen.
Texts: Interesting dramatic texts are being explored beyond Miller and Shakespeare.
Category 2 (Language and Literature):
Strengths: Well-considered submissions with thoughtful textual choices and pointed analysis.
Weaknesses: Less informed text selections, disparate discussions, struggle with the comparative element.
Compliance: Ensure texts are not both in translation.
Category 3:
Opportunity: Fertile space for candidates to explore interests, but language analysis can be left behind.
Texts: Political speeches and advertisements are common; song lyrics (especially rap) are increasingly popular.
Note: Song lyrics are considered literary texts (poetry).
Pitfalls: EEs on comic books, video games, and specific varieties of English often fail to clearly identify specific texts for analysis.
