Key Points:
Compulsory for Diploma Students: The EE is a mandatory component for all taking the full Diploma Programme.
Grade Requirement: To be awarded the IB Diploma, you must achieve a grade of D or higher on your EE.
External Assessment: The EE is externally assessed by IB examiners.
Contribution to Total Score: The EE is combined (below) with the grade for Theory of Knowledge (ToK), together contributing up to three points to the overall score for the diploma.
Work Commitment: The EE typically results from approximately 40 hours of student work, involving research, writing, and reflection.
Writing Requirements: A formal, sustained academic essay of no more than 4,000 words accompanied by a reflection of less than 500 words.
The EE is graded out of 34 points; broken into five mains sections.
