LEARNING OUTCOME 1
Learning outcome 1 is the stage of the project that gives me the opportunity to individually investigate a range of media disciplines, various contexts, and and professional practitioners. This is the section of the project that gives me time to explore a range of ideas, and talking points to cover in my essay. There is a range of required elements for this stage of the project that will assist my individual investigation, including mind maps, essay headings, and preliminary research - these are all things that will help inform my research, and the various ideas and talking points that could be covered in my final essay.
Initial Reactions
When I initially learnt about this project and the requirements that are attached with it, I was rather cautious and sceptical of it. But with the launch of the project today, and being able to dive deeper into the structure of the written demands, I am feeling rather optimistic about the project. There were a few things that I was worried about before the launch of the project, one of which being the amount of work that needs to be done. When you are at the beginning of a project, it sometimes feels like you have a huge mountain to climb, and this project is no different. This is largely due to the amount of content, and how thorough each stage is, showing how different this project is to any other written task. There are so many different stages that have to be covered when writing this essay, highlighting how important it is to write about something that you have a personal interest with, and importantly, can help you prepare for my final major project. Up to this point, I had occasionally looked at the unit 12 page in the year 2 handbook, which had been useful in preparation. But being able to look through the project thoroughly today, it has made me more assured and relieved for the beginning of the project. I believe that this project will give me a good chance to analyse an area of interest at a more thorough level, enabling me to learn more about something that will help me with my final major project. And during this course, I believe that my ability to write large amounts of work has improved considerably. I am now able to effectively structure essays, and produce good points in that work, which is something that I wouldn’t have even considered being able to do before this course. I believe that if I am able to select a subject to cover efficiently, I will be able to complete this study successfully. There are a few ideas that I have for this project that will help me with my final project starting in February. In conclusion, I am optimistic about this project. It will give me a good chance to analyse a useful area of interest, that will help me with my next project, and overall as a student filmmaker. I will be able to test what I can do on a written level, and how effectively I can analyse a particular topic.
Initial Investigations
Resonating With Characters: An Effective Way For An Audience To Connect With A Film?
Pros
Able to explore the importance of characters
Could potentially be useful for my FMP, as actors will probably be needed in the drama
Able to understand the reasons why audiences can become fond of characters
This could be helpful in understanding how to create characters before they are presented on screen. Can be relevant to both script writing, and the ideas development stage of my next project.
Will be able to research how effective characters are for audience engagement, and whether I could use the methods of this in my own work.
Would enable me to analyse the practical, and theoretical elements that contribute to audiences resonating with characters.
Cons
Depending on the genre, it may not be necessary for me to create relatable characters in my project. This could go for a genre such as a horror.
Relating to characters may not always be an important factor, maybe not at all. Audiences can become engaged by other ways through a character, and most of the time this is more apparent.
Yes, characters could potentially feature in my product, but relatability is something that is not likely to be a factor.

Thrillers: How Is Suspense Maximised?
Pros
Could be very useful for my final major project, as thrillers, and suspense are genres/features that I am interested in using.
This question can be explored thoroughly, due to how often suspense is used in film, meaning that there can be many talking points and chapters to explore.
Gives me the opportunity to explore thrillers AND suspense.
Could explore the idea of typical tropes, and typical conventions.
Further understanding of practitioners and their impact.
Can see the different ways/methods in which suspense is maximised.
This essay idea would give me the opportunity to analyse the practical, and theoretical elements that contribute to maximising suspense.
Cons
The term 'suspense' could be claimed to be too vague, resulting in the overall question possibly not being answered.

Can Colours Be Used As A Motif To Support A Narrative?
Pros
Colour is a very important part of film, meaning that many areas of colour can be explored in this essay.
Can explore how exactly colours, and their patterns/reoccurrence in films can contribute to a narrative.
Gives me an opportunity to look into how past, and present practitioners have used colour to further emphasise the narrative in one of their films.
Cons
Colour can be a weaker method for supporting narrative, or symbolising subjects. So it could be more effective to write an essay on more impactful methods.
Making a black and white film is definitely possible for my final major project.
