The Circular Classroom is a social enterprise committed to creating net-zero classrooms in Singapore.
We focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste generated in the education system.
We train and mobilise students, parents and lifelong learners in the community
to play an active role in advancing Singapore's sustainable development agenda.
Our work contributes towards the education targets of the Singapore Green Plan 2030
and the Government's efforts to become a zero-waste nation.
Our main focus is textile waste and to find solutions for the reuse, repurposing and recycling of pre-loved school uniforms.
Over 420,000 students are enrolled in Primary, Secondary, Mixed Level Schools or Junior Colleges in Singapore.
Based on a Pilot Study by SMU-X in 2023, over 70% of students own 3 or more sets of school uniforms.
About 86% of school uniforms end up in general waste or are donated to organisations where further usage is mostly unknown.
To contribute to the National Day celebrations, The Circular Classroom was be invited by PUB's Sustainable Singapore Gallery in Marina Barrage to design the exhibition "From Uniform to Unity – SG60: Where Education Meets Sustainability for a Greener Singapore". Set up from 9 August to 22 September 2025, the exhibition documented Singapore’s school communities’ contribution to national sustainability goals. We demonstrated how textile waste - specifically school uniforms - can be reimagined as functional products, art pieces, and awareness tools that support the Singapore Green Plan and promote a circular economy. Highlights of the exhibition were the artworks:
SG60 Emblem: “Stitched with Love, Pride & Unity”
Merlion “Steward for Sustainability”
Large-Scale QR Code Installation
School Uniforms 2.0: Products made from pre-loved School Uniforms
A big thank you to Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), Changkat Primary School, St Patrick’s School, Victoria School, National Junior College, and Tampines Meridian Junior College who partnered with us on this exhibition and whose repurposed school uniform items were displayed. We were also grateful to ITE College East which donated mannequins to present the school uniforms.
In 2025, Singapore will celebrate 60th Anniversary. We aim to collect 60,000 pre-loved (used) school uniforms to meaningfully reuse and repurpose. This will lead to at least12 ton less of textile waste in our landfills.
Parents are key agents for change in the transformation to a circular education system. We aim to set up a "Parents for Sustainability Network" and mobilise 500 parent leaders from the community to connect Singapore homes and schools through sustainability initiatives.
Collaboration is key. This year, Singapore celebrates its 60th Anniversary. We aim to partner with 60 Primary and Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges on environmental awareness and action campaigns, ranging from Learning Weeks for Students, Parent Workshops, Uniform Donation Drives, or Green School Studies.
We are not there yet, so: students and parents - it's your turn! You can contribute to making Singapore a greener place and we invite you to be a part of a transformative journey! Give us 7 minutes of your time and share your views about Sustainable Consumption in a survey led by Singapore Management University students.
