International Electives for Foreign Medical Students

CIM accepts foreign medical students for their External International Electives. Eligible foreign student applicants will be exposed to the various health facilities affiliated with Cebu Institute of Medicine during their stay with CIM for their International Elective.

CIM is responsible for providing learning opportunities tailored to specific requirements and objectives of the foreign students.

The following are the learning opportunities of the students using the community oriented primary care approach at Cebu Institute of Medicine:

  • Ambulatory Care Experience

  • Provision of Primary Health Care

  • Culture and Health Care

  • Community Pediatrics and Adolescent Health

  • School Health

  • Women's Health

  • Philippine Health Care System and Ongoing Health Changes

  • Community Needs Assessment and Epidemiology


The foreign medical student will spend the first four (4) weeks in this health facility or depending on the number of days he applied for the elective. He/She will have a medical student buddy during the entire rotation under the direct supervision of a Family Medicine Resident with the Department Chairman as the overall coordinator of the learning process.

The Dean will appoint a CIM faculty adviser who will be in charge of all aspects of the foreign student’s experience in CIM in relation to his international elective. This will include the orientation, planning of other aspect of the rotation and information on important topics that would be of special interest to the student.

The foreign student will be evaluated by his/her peers and faculty monitors. End of the rotation overall performance will be prepared by the Department Chair using the evaluation form of the Medical School of origin. Feedback of the rotation will be done on the last day of his rotation.
