Andrea Muñoz-Gutiérrez

Welcome to my mini-space in the cyber-space!

I am an astrophysicist - I have a Masters degree (MSc) in Astronomy, and I am a Dr. Candidate in Astronomy by National Autonomous University of Mexico.

I am also an active member of the eBOSS and DESI collaborations. I work with the biggest 3D maps of the Universe made in the history of humanity! I work particularly with the intergalactic medium and its metallicity (the chemical composition of the gas that is spread among galaxies).

I am also a Science communicator. I collabore with several outreach projects in Mexico, and serve in DESI with Education and Public Outreach projects.

For service in Lyman-α Forest working group, as co-chair of the brand new Early Carreer Scientist committee for 2.5 years, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion liaison, Meetings Committee liaison, and contributions in Education and Public Outreach committees, I have been awarded with the Builder Status in the DESI Collaboration.

II received an Honorary Mention and earned a nomination for the "Alfonso Caso" medal for academic merit in recognition of my research conducted during my MSc in Astronomy and Thesis Defense.

Searcher for THE most distant forests by day, inspirational STEM outreacher by night, and @desisurvey's most colorful!"

Outside the academic world, I have hobbies and I enjoy doing many things.

I am a passionate dancer, initially immersing myself in the vibrant world of Mexican Folkloric dances. However, a health condition prompted me to explore new avenues. This led me to the captivating realm of Middle Eastern dances, where I joyfully expressed myself for several years. As my journey unfolded, I delved into improvisational formats and fusions. During the sanitary emergency I started learning Improv Team Sync (ITS) and I am starting to venture into the world of Fat Chance Belly Dance (FCBD®). These disciplines have empowered me to cultivate my unique artistic language, allowing me to convey my emotions and experiences authentically.

I am also a semiprofessional photographer. My journey began with formal education during my undergraduate studies with a year dedicated to scientific photography. I later took photographic genres and creative photography courses that enriched my skills and artistic vision. This experience nurtured my intuition to engage with instruments for astronomical research.

In addition to my artistic endeavors, I co-founded a project dedicated to raising awareness of indigenous traditions worldwide. This initiative has immersed me in the rich tapestry of mythology and provided valuable insights into diverse civilizations and cultures. Currently, our focus is on the Mayan peoples of Mesoamerica, particularly exploring their profound connection to sacred plants such as Cacao (Theobroma cacao) and Pataxte (Theobroma bicolor) and the Mayan calendar count. This exploration has led me to engage with Tatas and Nanas from different Mayan religions, offering me a unique opportunity to learn and participate in the ritualistic preparation and sharing of Cacao, a practice deeply embedded in their mythology, beliefs, and daily lives. This immersive experience has allowed me to walk in the shoes of these cultures, fostering a profound understanding and appreciation for the intricate tapestry of their traditions.

I've integrated this ancient wisdom into my professional journey, enriching my knowledge in archaeoastronomy.
