COLLEGE OF FISHERIES

Introduction

The Negros Occidental School of Fisheries (NOSOF) was established last August 7, 1961. It was in 1975 were the late Supt. Dionisio Guilbert proposed to offer BS in Fisheries Education and BS Fisheries considering the dearth of technical vocational personnel. From its opening up to the present the BS Fisheries program is still the flagship program of CHMSU- Binalbagan Campus. Several curricular revision were made in order to comply to the different CMOs issued by the Commission on Higher Education. Last September 17-19, 2018, the program was evaluated by AACCUP for Level II accreditation and was granted effective October 1, 2018 - September 30, 2022. In the quest for quality education adhering to the principle of continual improvement, the program was awarded by the Certificate of Program Compliance last March 25 2020.
CHMSU is an ISO certified institution and is committed to delivery quality higher education to its clientele.

GOAL OF THE COLLEGE

The College of Fisheries aims to:To develop scientific and technical knowledge anchored on sustainable fisheries productivity and promote linkages and networking in the implementation of Fisheries programs and projects.

BSFI PROGRAM

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The degree program shall be called Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (BSFi). The BS Fisheries degree is aligned with the Level 6 of the Philippine Qualifications Framework (PQF). The program supports the policy of the government as stated in The Fisheries Code of 1998 (R.A. 8550) "to ensure the rational and sustainable development, management and conservation of the fishery and aquatic resources in Philippine waters". The program covers the following fields of study: Aquaculture, Capture Fisheries, Post Harvest Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management. The program goals are to produce the following: Globally competitive graduates in the areas of sustainable aquaculture, responsible capture fisheries, post harvest fisheries and aquatic resources and ecology; Fisheries professionals imbued with high level of integrity, nationalism and ethical standards; Leaders in their profession and respective communities; and Professionals with knowledge, skills and positive attitudes in fisheries research, resource management, instruction, extension, production and marketing. Graduates of BSFi can be employed in the government, industry, academe, and non-government organizations and engaged in the following specific areas: Fisheries resource management, Fisheries research, Fisheries extension service, Fisheries entrepreneurship, Fisheries industry management, Fisheries education, Fisheries engineering, Fisheries nutrition and Fisheries biotechnology. PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After graduation, graduates of Bachelor of Science in Fisheries of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University shall have:

PEO 1

Have passed the licensure examination for Fisheries Technologist;

PEO 2

Work technicians in the fishery industry such as fish farms, coastal and offshore aquaculture, fish hatcheries, fishing vessels, post-harvest facilities in public or private institutions;

PEO 3

Engage in research as biologist, environmentalist, sociologist, fisheries economist and in any related capacity for the sustainable improvement of fishery industry

PEO 4

Perform job as community organizer in the formation of fishermen of fisher folks associations or cooperatives considered essential for a diverse but a unified people empowerment;

PEO 5

Assume supervisory and managerial responsibilities in the operation of fishing vessels, aquaculture ventures, fish processing and postharvest facilities, game and recreational fisheries, fishery law enforcement and coastal or marine environment conservation and rehabilitation;

PEO 6

Perform role as planner that can formulate fisheries programs and projects involving participation of different sectors and agencies though linkaging, networking and collaborating;

PEO 7

Actively involved in any professional or civic-oriented fisheries activities that promote the protection of stakeholders rights, fisheries policies education or information dissemination, and conservation, preservation of the marine resources towards viable and sustainable fishery industry;

PEO 8

Live as a law abiding citizen, proactive fisheries practitioner that promote for peaceful, orderly and progressive society.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

The graduates of Bachelor of Science in Fisheries of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University shall be able to:

Articulate and discuss the latest developments in Fisheries (PQF level 6 descriptor).
Effectively communicate orally and in writing using both English and Filipino.
Work effectively and independently in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams (PQF level 6 descriptor).
Act in recognition of professional, social, and ethical responsibility.
Preserve and promote “Filipino historical and cultural heritage” (RA 7722).
Generate and share knowledge relevant to specific fields in the study of Fisheries education.
Formulate and implement fisheries development plans and programs.
Develop, operate and manage aquaculture production systems.
Exploit and utilize wisely fisheries resources using appropriate and innovative fishing methods.
Apply post-harvest practices that are compliant to international standards for food safety and quality.
Manage and protect the integrity and quality of aquatic ecosystems and resources.

CHED ENDORSED CURRICULUM

The curriculum for BSFISHERIES covers a balanced treatment of functional areas in Aquaculture, Post-harvest, Capture and Marine Fisheries, and Aquatic Resources and Ecology. It prepares competent fisheries professionals who can contribute to sustainable and responsible fisheries. The subjects under the General Education (GE) courses are as per CHED memorandum no. 20 series of 2013. This curriculum is vertically aligned with the Agri-Fishery Arts strand of the senior high school academic track. The HEIs may be allowed to credit subjects/course taken by students abroad, provided they have the same required number of units and course description (CMO 17 s 2017, Article V, section 8).
