Kindergarten

Kindergarten students’ mathematical learning has a focus on the following areas: developing a sense of numbers by representing and comparing numbers (count objects in a set, count sequence, using numerals to represent quantities); basic understanding of operations and algebraic thinking (combine/separate objects leading to the concept of addition and subtraction); recognizing, describing and classifying shapes and using spatial relations.

By the end of kindergarten students should be able to; identify numbers 0-20, know the count sequence to 100, understand addition as putting together and subtraction as taking apart as well as, add and subtract within 5 fluently. Providing children the opportunity to count aloud, count objects, play interactive games (using numbers, dice, cards and manipulatives) will help strengthen their understanding of numbers and number relationships. Listed below are strategies and interactive sites that can be used to strengthen early numeracy skills.

Card games: Compare (aka “war”), Double Compare, Go-Fish, Old Maid, Uno and many more..

Other games: Yahtzee, Shut the Box, Monopoly, and many other board games that have early math skills innately embedded in them.
