Grade 1

In Grade 1, students learning in mathematics has a focus on the following areas: developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20 (counting on/down, using a number line, making ten/decomposing a number to make 10) ; developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones; and developing understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating length units.

At the end of first grade, students should know all combinations to 10. Students should also be able to fluently add and subtract within 10. To strengthen students’ skills in these areas please reference the games and strategies listed below.

By the end of first grade, students should understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent tens and ones. Students should be able to count, read & write numbers 0-100. Practicing these skills will strengthen students understanding of numbers and number relationships. Counting activities and online resources are listed below.
