AIS Mathematics

What is AIS?

AIS stands for Academic Intervention Services.  Academic services are designed to help students who are struggling to achieve the New York State learning standards in mathematics.

What is the purpose of AIS?

The purpose of our AIS math program is to provide students who are at risk of not meeting the New York State learning standards in mathematics with more teacher contact time to supplement and support the regular classroom program.  Students receive additional instruction and have an opportunity to practice their skills with close supervision.

What is AIS Mathematics?

AIS Mathematics is instruction designed to work on a student's weaknesses in the mathematics classroom.  The goals of the AIS math teacher are to identify and strengthen the student's weaknesses in mathematics and to help the student be successful in their regular mathematics classroom.  The AIS teacher also helps to prepare the student for the New York State Assessment given each year.  The AIS teacher uses manipulatives and/or games to reinforce basic skills and concepts, and computer software to introduce and practice skills.  In addition, students also review and practice problem solving strategies and use real life situations that require the use of mathematics skills. (See below for a list of the concepts for each grade level.)

Major Concepts by Grade Level

The following chart lists the mathematics skills to focus on for each grade level.  Continue reviewing and practicing these skills to help with retention.  The links below for IXL, Addition Blocks, and Khan Academy provide review and practice.  Students can choose grade level and math skill in both IXL and Khan Academy.  Learning facts is equally important!  Addition Blocks is a fun way for students to practice facts.  Choose Addition for K-2 and Multiplication for 3-5 by choosing below the gameboard.  Also, check the Math Game Videos for easy games to play at home with minimal materials to help your child learn their facts.
