Grade 5

Students enter fifth grade able to add and subtract large numbers using traditional strategies along with strategies for mental math. They should also be able to multiply up to two digit times two digit numbers like 24 x 56 using the area model or traditional strategy and divide three digit numbers by one digit like 534 ÷ 4 using either long or short division. See Multiplication/ Division Strategies below to see some of the strategies your child may use.

In fifth grade, students will solidify their knowledge and application of multiplication and division of whole numbers. At this level students MUST know their multiplication and related division facts to be successful. If your child has difficulty with her/his facts, check out Math Game Videos and Online Games & Apps below for ideas. The goal is for students to develop computational fluency, learning a variety of strategies to use to solve problems. Students will look at the numbers involved in the problem and will then decide on a method that best fits the situation.

Students in fifth grade continue building their foundation for understanding and applying fractions, decimals, and percents. They learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals. This is a major emphasis for fifth grade mathematics.
